Dead battery from rear wiper on 06 4runner

Hi guys, first time poster. I need some help with my 2006 4runner. I have recently had issues with something drawing power overnight and killing my battery. It's happened 5 times now, if I leave the car for more than 12 hours the battery will be dead, the battery itself is in good shape and can hold a charge if disconnected. I have read about the "erratic rear hatch" functions which can cause this. When I do have enough juice to start it, the rear wiper always goes back and forth one time immediately after it turns over, which leads me to believe there is an issue with the rear wiper drawing power.

Anyone have suggestions to fix this?

I once had a problem with the rear hatch ground wire breaking in the hinge on another Toyota product, caused all kinds of mysterious electrical problems. The power to the door open sensor fed backward through the other hatch components, seeking ground. Something to check.
 
I think you are on the right track if the wiper does a cycle when you turn the vehicle on. And I agree about checking grounds. Was it ever taken apart back there? Fender Bender or something? If not, your situation builds on my existing worries with the variety of sensors and gadgets these 4Runners have.
 
It's bone stock. Never been wrecked or taken apart. I just took the back panel off and couldn't find a ground wire, so I just disconnected the plug for the rear wiper motor. I hope that will isolate the problem.
 
No Check Engine Light, I am guessing? And no Toyota warranty still? I am new to Toyota so I do not know who makes the most comprehensive repair manual but I would think the next step is continuity and ohm load testing with a multimeter. But this can get complicated and/or difficult to tap all the wires without a diagnosing harness (if Toyota has one and I figure they do).

You should take it to a shop and bull crap with the guy and see what he is willing to do to diagnose it. If the price seems ridiculous, try another shop. Or....Toyota and pay that bill....ouch.
 
Rear wiper/low battery voltage/dead battery

Just found this post.
I am having the same issues with my '06 4Runner Sport 4x4.
When I have left the car for a couple days, when I turn key, the rear wiper makes one cycle (wiper switch off). Now it is getting worse.
Before I just replace the battery I wanted to see if anyone had a similar problem?

I used to own a mercedes wagon that would loose charge overnight. I replaced the battery, then it still happened. I eventually visited the mercedes forum and discovered the issue. It was the power seat on the driver's side drawing continuous power. They came up with a simple fix on the forum. Forums are great for discovering common issues. Good luck.
 
With your multi-tester you can remove one fuse at a time and check current accross to see what system or device is drawing power.
 
I had the same rear wiper issue with my 06 4runner until yesterday. Everytime I start the car the rear wiper goes off. I replaced my battery yesterday and this morning it did not happen. Hopefully I don't have something drawing power from my new battery. I would also like to note that when I replaced my battery the negative terminal was covered in green acid powder. So it could possibly be a bad terminal too.

This will probably not identify the problem because there are several systems that are always "on" and you will get a continual 12 volt read. And volts aren't the issue-- it's amps. Anything over a 2 or 3 amp continual draw is what drains batteries.

The better way to diagnose is to disconnect the negative battery cable and put your ammeter in line. Let it sit for awhile to insure that all of the components that start up with electricity go back into "sleep" mode (can take several minutes). When the draw stabilizes read that number as baseline, then start pulling fuses. I don't know what the "sleeping" amp draw on a 4Runner is but I'm guessing it's under 2 amps. Be sure to NOT engage the starter while your ammeter is hooked up (Ask me how many times I've had to replace 10 amp ammeter fuses).

Hopefully, your problem isn't intermittent, finding those sucks.

What is the fix for this? I have the same issue but what doesnt make any sense to me is that I have a brand new Optima battery in it that got installed probably 3 months ago.

If your rear wiper makes one solitary swipe upon start-up and the switch is in the "off" position, that's the 4Runner's way of telling your your battery needs to be replaced.

Thanks for the response, the rear wiper is continuously on, regardless of a key being in the ignition.
