I'm being offered an '06 Sport with a $34896 sticker at dealer cost as shown on the dealer inquiry report...

27707 Base price
150 In dash 6 CD
100 Double decker cargo
160 Rear spoiler
720 Power moon roof
344 Tow hitch
6 Owners portfolio
114 Carpet mats
605 Destination
500 TDA
10 Gas
645 Dealer holdback
322 Financial reserve

$31383 Total plus TTL

I initially thought it was a great deal until I called around. All of the dealers I spoke to are offering the same deal right off the bat, without me coming in, telling them I

That looks like it's in the right ballpark.
I got a V8 Limited 4WD for about $800 over what Edmunds says invoice price should be (without TDA and "financial reserve").
In the Midwest region, there's an additional $1000 rebate available through tomorrow, 4/2/06. If that's available in your area, you can take off another $1000. Thanks to the rebate, my actual cost was about $5000 below MSRP!

In this economy with these gas prices, i would aim for invoice. At most, i will pay $500 over invoice...emphasis is on "at most"! THEN, ask for the rebate WITH the special financing! You have several dealerships around, so play hardball! Nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

You tell 'em straight out..."I will buy today IF you can give me this price _________." Trust me, when you say this, it makes these dealerships drool.

There is a reason why special financing is everywhere, esp. on SUVs. Remember, the more piss off the finance officer is at you, the better you sleep at night because you know that you got a great deal!

Good luck.

Thanks for the input guys.

When I was sitting at the dealer with these numbers in front of me, I countered with a much lower number and told them I would take the truck if the met it. I know that my offer was pretty much a low-ball, but I figured if they would meet me even close to 1/2 way that I would be getting a deal.

The salesman went to talk to his manager and came back with nothing. Not even a $100. This supprised me a bit as it was 9 PM on Friday, the last day of the month/quarter.

The salesman called me today, but I missed his call and he didn't leave a message. Hopefully it was with a much better deal. I guess Monday will be the day I find out if I'm getting the truck as the 2.9% ends and I doubt they will be offering a better deal next month.

I wonder if my low-ball offer made them think I'm not serious. I'm sure we'll be talking on Monday, any ideas on what I can say to motivate them?

Stick with the low-ball offer...the FACT that they called you is a very good thing. If they thought that it was a stupid offer, then they would not waste their time calling you.

Stick with it.

Is 29400 with or w/o the rebate?

You should also try another dealer. Make the same "LOW BALL" offer and see what happens.

P.S. What exactly did ou offer?

There is a trade involved, but my net offer came out to about $29200 out the door.

That's without the $1000 rebate. I want the 2.9% because it works out better over term. (current new car rates are about 5.9-6.9)

I just paid $31,000 out the door on Friday for the exact one that you are talking about rw229. I took the rebate. I could probably go look up what I actually paid for the truck (31k - TTL) if you would like.

Get a Costco membership.

During my research into buying a 4Runner, I checked out the Costco members' auto buying program.

For the 4Runner, the deal is $500 over invoice. Then they'll take off any rebates from Toyota, so in theory you can get the car for less than invoice.

It was a great deal.

However, I didn't want to spend that much. I ended up with a Toyota Certified 2004 Sport with a V-8, for which I paid $23,400. Sure, I had to drive a hundred miles to get it, but it was thousands less than any deal I could get on a lesser T4R here in the NYC area. The only trouble is it needs some scratched paint touched up.

Fun car, though.

That would be great, thanks. Did you have a trade? I really wish I didn't because it just makes the deal that much more complicated.

$30,824 without the rebate so I guess it would be $29,824 with the rebate. I traded in my wife's 02 Rodeo. Didn't get much for it but it had been wrecked twice.

Sorry the $29,400 was including the $1K rebate. Actually, I chose not to take the $1k rebate, I qualified for the 2.9% (surprisingly) and took that instead.

Good luck! I'm love my new 4 runner

rw229,

the deal is not really that complicated. just make sure you separate the purchase price from the trade-in, meaning make sure you establish the price first before even bringing up the trade-in to the dealer. This will isolate the issues and make your purchase process a little easier. Don't let the dealer sucker you into mixing your trade-in into the purchase price.

Well, I did the deal... 2006 Galactic Gray Sport. It came out to just about $31500 including TTL. I could have taken off another $1000 with the rebate, but the financing was a better deal.

The reason I mentioned the trade earlier is because that's what made the deal. All of the dealers were offering invoice on the truck, but varying 1-2k on the trade.

I shopped four dealers and of the three I didn't buy from, they were $1090, $1345 and $1568 higher in price. I'm confident I got the best deal that that I was going to get.

Thanks again for all of your input!
