Dealer can adjust for tire size?

A real good friend of mine is a master technician for Ford and I told him I may go to a larger size tire next time on my 4runner "265/70/17" and he says to bring it to your dealer and have them plug it in and re-calibrate it ? He says he does this all the time on the Fords ........ He says it changes the shift points and adjusts for the larger tire size.

Have any of you had this done ?

I've asked the dealer about it, and they've denied any knowledge of being able to do such a thing. But then again, they also don't know what C-BEST settings are.

The factory isn't that tight about calibrating the speedo... they don't adjust each one individually based on which wheels are installed on that particular unit. They program the computer for a setting that's a reasonable average of all of the tire sizes available on that model.

Is this an urban myth?

I have heard the same thing both on this board and from a friend. I've also seen the conversion charts that calculate the change of mileage and speed but minutes after i had my new "Bigger" tires installed i went to a dealer and they turned me away saying that it couldnt be done and if so it wouldnt be worth it cuz the correction is minimal. I'm anxious to see this finally put to rest with some kind of hard proof or documentation, which i could hopefully take back to my dealer.
