Dealer negotiations for a T4r TE

Looking to hear some input from people who have recently negotiated a sale on a new T4r...trail edition especially.

What is a good starting point, do you think? Are dealers willing to go below invoice on these things? It seems trail editions are relatively rare, speaking in terms of what is out there for SR5 and Ltds.

Just looking to get some data points from what buyers have experienced while in the market.

I recently sold my old car and would like to get a new T4r. Just trying to figure out if I really want to take the new car plunge in terms of price $$.

Thanks for any input.

Last February, I paid $38,500 for a 2010 TE with Navigation and KDSS, plus tax/title/licensing. I had to wait for one to come off the boat so I could get the color I wanted. I wouldn't think that anyone should pay more than that and some people have even paid less.

Search this forum for "invoice" and you will see plenty of material and tactics how to get $500-$1000 under invoice. Location is also a factor in pricing. Good luck.

There are multiple car buying services that you can use. They give a great quote that you can take to the dealership and eliminate the majority of price haggling. I used USAA and paid 37K for a loaded 2010 Trail. CostCo also has a good service, $50 to sign up and could save you hundreds to thousands of dollars.

Purchased last week and paid $38,558 2011 Limited, 4x4, NAV. Which is like $400-500 under invoice, so I'm happy. Went through the usaa website (it's available to anybody).
Good Luck!

First of all don't tell them you just sold your car and you need new one fast. This is a "weak point" giveaway that they are waiting for.

If you aren't set on specific or rare color (Salsa Red, Shoreline Blue in my area) it is possible to go under the invoice price with your negotiations. If dealer will have the truck you want on his lot, you are even in better position.
Also having quotes from other dealers in your area and from the internet services like USAA will help a lot.

Couple weeks ago I ordered a 2011 Trail in Salsa Red - very rare in my area. Each dealer I visited told me that I will have a hard time fighting for the lower price. Finally I found one that I felt that price was right.

I paid $33,500 ( + taxes and fees) without KDSS and navigation. Let me add that this was my first time buying new car :) It may seem high for some but my wife had enough of 3 hour negotiating process and we new, because of the rarity of this color, that it will be hard to match this price somewhere else if we would walk out that day.

The only thing I regret is that I didn't know at that time, my fault, that I could add just KDSS without the navigation. I was never informed by the dealer of having this option and also, on Toyota.com I could only "built" the truck with KDSS+navigation for my state. I didn't want navigation, and spending +$4000 to have KDSS didn't seem right to me at that time.

Be informed and report back.

Good luck!

I just picked up a 2011 Magnetic Gray TE with KDSS & NAV for $36,833 with cargo cover and mats last week. It was $700 under invoice, which I got through the AMEX section on zag.com. It also points you to USAA, but I couldn't use that buying service. I really appreciate the KDSS handling on the highway as it doesn't 'lean' into curves and corners.
Good luck in your search.

Did your dealer tack on a bunch of bs fees? like advertisement, dealer holdback etc...

thanks chatham, that's great info as that's pretty much the exact truck i have my eye on. good to know they can be had for under invoice. did you have to rake them over the coals to get that price or was it pretty easy?

Use the Default method. Knock off $5K off the sticker price. :lmao:

That really is a fantastic method. I ended up at $4,300 off sticker and I was happy. It wasn't really a negotiation. I emailed a bunch of dealers, the lowest was $4,000 off sticker, asked for $4,500, got 4,300. Bought warranty from Midwest Superstore in Hutchinson, KS. Bought scotchguard at WMT and the only people not happy when I left the dealer was the dealer.

None of the dealers in the NE area had the TE w/KDSS & NAV available, so I found one out of the region in PA. I had called them previously and they didn't match my AMEX pricing at the time. However, they called on November 30th and wanted to know if I still wanted the vehicle. I said that I did if they would match the AMEX pricing. They said that they would if I gave them a $5K non-refundable deposit. They faxed me the paperwork outlining the exact deal. It turned out to match my numbers, so I signed the paperwork, faxed it back and gave them the $5K credit card deposit. I did drive down to the dealer to pick it up (about 370 miles 1-way) with a rental car which I dropped off a block from the dealer. Very pleased with their reception at the dealer and the quality of the truck. It has been many many years since I picked up a new car with 3 miles on it!
Now, I need some floor mats to get ready for the winter season.

New member here. Just picked up 2011 Trail with KDSS, floor mats, cargo mat and cargo cover for 35,892. Basically 100.00 over invoice in Seattle area. I started out with the Costco program with was 800 over invoice then I used the USAA program which was 430 roughly over invoice. Sent that information to the dealer and they said they would sell me any 4Runner for 100.00 over invoice which they did. I did not want the mats or cover but it was the only thing available in my area (Seattle) so just took it and listed them on craigslist. I think I got a good deal overall.

I got the same price here in So Cal for my 2010 a few months ago.

Not the best price but TE's were scarce and Mag Grey's even more so.

Not the best option for a deal. So I left some dollars on the table.

Got a flat tire a week later and had the dealer replace the tire for free so regained a bit of rain that way.
