Dealer quotes...

Hello all,

I am a new poster, but have been a lurker for quite a while now. I had a 2007 4r that I traded in for an 2010 Taco. I still have the Taco, but now I am in the market for a new 4r. I love the new stying and our Explorer is at the end of it's life so it's time for something new.

I know this topic has been beaten to death, and I have read and read and read the previous posts, but I want y'all "expert" opinions on this one...

So I have 4 different quotes for a Black SR5 w/ the premium package with leather. I ran this through the USAA car buying service and TrueCar and it says that invoice with options is $32,021. This is in the Chicago region.

Now, the dealer I want to purchase from (closest to office and home) quoted me $33,950 and says they cannot go any lower. I have had two dealerships quote me at least $1000 less. This is the salesman respose to my email asking if he can beat the other quotes:

I understand you’re telling me you’re getting a better quote elsewhere. It’s not adding up for me, where am I missing ya?
They make it the 4Runner sr5 a couple of different ways. The quote I gave you is the only way to get FACTORY leather in the vehicle. Should we be working on that one?
They do not sell 4runnes without the convince package in this region.
This is a newer redesigned model and I am getting closer to list than invoice most of the time.
If we go aftermarket… it’s not a better deal in my opinion.
LIST is 34,444 invoice is $31,614 and we would normally charge $1,600 for leather.
I would sell this car for 3% over invoice and then to ADD leather would cost $1,600.
$32,596 + 1600 > my $33,950.00 price I just quote you.
End dealer email

Is he feeding me a line of BS? Do they really not sell SR5 w leather w/o the convinience package?
The other dealerships qouted me MSPR $36, 119 and they will sell it of $32,544.

FYI... USAA car buying service brought back three dealership quotes at
$31,321.

He technically wasn't lying...
They don't sell the "convince package" in any area. :jump:

Tell him no deal and give him your number to call you when he is ready to make the deal you want.

If you get leather (TI) you will get Convenience (CP). What I don't get is MSRP on those packages is 36,065, which means you didn't get power seats, didn't get the am/fm/xm, etc, you didn't get ANYTHING else.

Assuming this is correct, you should get $4,000+ off MSRP. If you insist on buying it from the bloke who emailed you (and I have no idea why you would want to even deal with him anymore), then send him the quotes from the other dealerships.

people get bogged down in "invoice, holdback, reserve", etc. Just take the sticker, subtract -4,000 to 5,000 and that is what you should pay.

Thanks for the info. I am not insistent on buying from him... It would be the most convenient place to buy, but I have no problem going elsewhere. I am just curious how much a line of bs he is feeding me. I guess he doesn't want my $$$

Yikes. Not a great way to negotiate and will likely not get you the best price. First, it shows you really have no clue what you should pay and how much profit is baked in to MSRP, and second, some dealers tack on an extra $2K of "dealer mark-up" on top of sticker, or charge $1200 for tint, etc.

All of that extra stuff will either be on a separate piece of paper, or on separate line items on the sticker under dealer installed options. And that is not Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price, but instead is MSRP + dealer installed options. 2 different prices. My 4runner MSRP was 36,345 before tint, the paint crap and other stuff. The dealer wanted to charge me for it, I said, "take it off".

I fully understand how much profit is baked into MSRP, and I respectfully disagree that too many people try and understand the minutia of dealerholdback, reserve "invoice" etc. What one dealer says is invoice is not what another dealer said. The same car I bought was on two lots, same color, same MSRP. One dealer said invoice was $33,000 one said it was $32,500. The diff was one was including the TDA in the calc and one wasn't.

For this persons question, Truecar says invoice is $32,021, but the dealers are saying invoice is much higher. They all define invoice differently, and taking $4,000 off the MSRP is better than any of the quotes he has got so far.

It really comes downt to how much time, etc you want to spend. Some people walk into a car dealership, look at the sticker and say, "I will pay that". Some people email a bunch of dealers, some people go get Trucar, edmunds etc and send that to the dealers. It just depends. Are you going to get a car 10k off MSRP (without the excess crap), probably not, 6-7k, maybe if you work really hard, 4-5k - yes, and somewhat easily, and 2-3k - everyone coughs this up by you just saying, "can I pay less than MSRP?" It all comes down to the effort you want to put in, and your own personal definition of "best price"

Yup... look at Fords for example, I see ads all the time for F150's with $11,000 off MSRP. What a joke: Summer Sellation Savings!

There's probably been even crazier deals, since some MSRP's are outrageously overpriced.

Not sure about the configuration issue.

On price, shoot to pay invoice, but don't pay more than $500 over invoice knowing that many have paid invoice (me included) and some have said they paid $1,000 below invoice. And know that you aren't making any friends at the dealership when paying invoice unless you deal with the service manager directly. Any trade will muddy up the deal/numbers.
