We all know the dealer is a ripoff for just about anything.

Toyota dealers seem to be good at this. When I need a part I look up the price online to see what it retails for. Then when they want a ridiculous price I tell them what list price is and ask them if they will sell it for that. Their answer has always been " Yeah, we can do that". Toyota parts are high enough to begin with. When I buy parts for my Hyundai from the dealer they only charge suggested retail.
Must be your dealer. I bought a few at my local dealer a few weeks ago. Still $5.xx each. And I thought that was high.

techs are usually flat/piece rate. They gotta get paid too.
People are so fast to ***** about the dealer without realizing its a business as well. A business that you dont have to shop at.
coming from someone who sticks up for big banks compared to government (big priv sector guy here) in terms of housing bubble and when thinking about our 20 trill in debt...i hear your point, but the problem with the car dealers is that in my eyes a majority of parts are dealer only, or limited elsewhere. its easy to feel gouged there. good old licensing, international business, and strict American labor/consumer standards perhaps.
Completely true. The only thing I've ever bought at the dealer was antifreeze. Our Toyota dealer won't even sell parts at list.
Shop around, our Chevy dealer charges over list for parts, but the GMC dealer charges under list. Same item, same town.

but its the same here on the other side of the Atlantic.
I avoid the TOY dealers, ridiculous prices! There is no justification for that, except for greed and abuse of customers who are made to believe that OEM is so much better.
Aftermarket parts come in different quality and if you are careful you can get the same - sometimes even better - quality than the OEM parts.
Just think about the notorious problem of stuck brake calipers! Aftermarket offers better quality than TOY.
Will have to do mine for the second time in five years. And this time I will take quality calipers and disks from non-OEM brands!

i hear you, i sold Toyota parts for 4 years and got a ton of abuse. But i sold it at list and if someone was making a big purchase or was a regular that wasnt a jerk i'd hook them up. No excuse for a dealer who tries selling everything at inflated price. A sale at list or slight discount, is better than no sale at all is how i ran my counter. But if the customers being a jerk, gloves were off and marked up considerably.
