Dealer says new carrier assembly ?

99 4r with 149k, V6 2wd. took it to the dealer to see what was causing this rear end vibration and howling i was hearing, they called me within an hour and said it was my back right wheel bearing, about a $400 fix, so i said ok. they call back 4 hrs later and said that wasnt the fix, and that i need a new carrier assembly. quoted me $1650 for parts and labor . they didnt charge me for the bearing or the labor to install it since they didnt fix the problem, is there a cheaper way to fix this problem im having with my rear end, they are saying $1250 for the carrier assembly alone. this seems hi to me, what do you guys think ?

It isn't terribly difficult to replace the carrier yourself.
Find out your axle ratio and buy a used one. I've replaced a couple of my friends 3rd members and have not paid over a hundy for either.
 
Pretty sure I have a 4.10 or 4.30 V6 3rd in the shop in perfect shape I would sell. How does $250 shipped sound?

Uh, you may want to confirm with them exactly what is wrong, like have them show you. If the diff is really bad, then they should have it apart and show you. My gut would be to call BS their diagnosis, but these diffs do go bad sometimes. It could just be a bad bearing in the diff, or just the gears, which don't warrant a whole new diff like they want to sell you.

And if it really is the diff, then take Scotty's diff, cause that is a great deal regardless of which gear ratio it is (which doesn't matter to you since you have a 2WD). You could have the unique 2WD with a 4.3 ratio!

Did they already get you on the hook for the $400 for the bearing?
 
they didnt charge me a dime for the bearing work, i couldnt believe it, i guess they thought they would make up for it when they got me on the carrier assembly
 
just told my dealership story to a local mechanic that i have used before and he thinks i should let him look at it instead of jumping into a used carrier assembly. he thinks it could be either carrier or pinion bearing and the whole carrier might not be needed. what you guys think ?

From what I have read, that is likely the case, but at $250 for a known good diff, I don't know that you will save money having the bearing replaced. That of course is assuming that the used diff doesn't have any problems. Not that Scotty would sell you a bad part, but there is always an unknown with used parts.

Plus, with pressing on new bearings, you have to make sure the guys doing the work actually knows how to set up a differential.
