If I solely wanted better gas mileage, I'd buy a Subaru 4cyl with the CVT! :beer:
The V8 is about as smooth and powerful an engine in an SUV that you'll ever find.
The same engine found in the Landcruiser and Lexus 470 that costs thirty five to forty thousand more!
I pay the additional dollars for fuel knowing that I have a V8 that can pull a boat trailer easily over the mountain passes and can accelerate and run the mountain roads with absolute ease.
After almost seven years of owning the V8... I still get a smile on my face when I drive it! :guitar3:
Oh... btw... it's never needed any repairs other than the routine maintenance I've given it and the warranty fix of the driveline clunk.

Couldn't agree more.
How did you get the driveline clunk fixed?? Under warranty? I've been keeping it lubed but it always eventually comes back.

If you tow the V8 and having a little extra grunt off road if you're helping a fellow off roader get unstuck would be nice but even with my 190hp V6 in my 3rd gen I've never wished I had more power outside of having a little ease in passing slower traffic. If I did get a 4th gen I'd most likely end up with a V8 but I think I'll be skipping to a used 5th gen TE when I replace my '99 but right now my '99 is so dang reliable and just purrs along.
If I had to buy today I wouldn't buy a 5th generation. Too big for my current needs.
The current Toyota vehicle that fits my current needs...is the Toyota Highlander. It's about the same size as my 05 4runner. I don't need a BIGGER vehicle. Why manufacturers think BIGGER IS BETTER is beyond me. It's been that way since I started buying cars 30+ years ago.

I brought up the clunk to the service manager who is an old friend right after I purchased the 4Runner new.
When I read that there was a TSB for the 'fix', that I learned about here in the forum, I brought this to his attention and the local dealer honored the fix and covered it.
I also have an extended warranty but they never asked me for paperwork. Whether they looked it up or not, I do not know.
Bottom line: I think the dealer and the factory just did me a favor (if this really exists in the automotive world) and they replaced it with the newer driveshaft.
