Dealers VS Autoshops

I don't know if I am posting this in the right place...but anyways

I am running OEM brakes at the moment...I am going to replace the fronts sometime before December

Now....the Dealer wants $230 + tax OEm Lifetime

Firestone will do the standard for $170 + tax 1 Year Warranty with a $30 discount coupon + a % disccount if I pay with my Firestone card.


It worth it to go the cheap way?

I've had my breaks, tires, spark plugs, trans fluid, allignment, and engine coolant all replaced at firestone with never and issue.

The only catch with the brakes is that Toyota designs them with "anti-squeak shims". You're supposed to remove the shims from the old pads and put them on the new pads. If the tech doesn't know about that, he'll throw them away with the old pads, and your brakes will start squeaking in no time. A tech at a Toyota dealership should know about that, but then again, I've learned that the sometimes don't even read TSB's.

So, I'd say that having another place do a brake job is fine, but ask them about the shims to make sure they know about them.
