Dealership installed lift kits...

Hey all,

I've been thinking of going from two cars (one being a 4th Gen) to a single new (or newish) 5th gen for a bit now (see post here http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/263866-4th-gen-5th-gen-talk-me.html).

A dealership here in Denver has been pursuing me to take one of their 3 lifted 2018 TRD ORP's for a few days now. While I like the idea of having a new 4Runner come from the dealership set up almost exactly how I'd want (2-3" lift sitting on 33" tires), I'm not sure what kind of value it really is. I was told they basically take the TRD Pro suspension kit and put it on this and bump it up to a 3" lift, but I was being told that by a salesperson who likely is just told to repeat lines, and he's telling it to me who's lifted 2 of my 4Runners now in my driveway.

I took advantage of them being closed today to get a better look on my own without salespeople breathing down my neck. From what I can tell, it's a Bilstein kit of some sort (5100 or 6112), but not the TRD Pro since those have external reservoirs in the rear, and I didn't see reservoirs anywhere. Also looks like stock UCAs and spacers to clear the UCAs, which I'm *not* keen on. The front look like adjustable coilovers, and while the CV angles don't look to be severe, there doesn't appear to be a diff drop. Although that's hard to tell without dropping the skid plate though, so who knows.

Oh, and the KDSS system appears to be absent which I know is a $1500 option isn't it?

So, what I'm wondering is if they're willing to go down to $43k from their $47 asking, do I bite? While they've saved me a lot of work I guess, I'm not a fan of KO2s (rather have Duratracs), I don't want spacers to be able to clear my UCAs, and I think the Bilstein kit they put on is pretty bargain basement. When I priced out just getting a stock TRD ORP and doing it myself it's around $3-4k with tires, lift, UCAs, etc.

That’s a rip off! It’s just Bilstein 5100’s which are like 350 bucks and toytec coilovers. The wheels and grill are cheap as well. You would be better off buying a TRD Off Road for 37-38k after negotiating and buying the mods and installing them.

Ah hah! Yeah, and glad you mentioned the TRD Pro grill stuff because I couldn't care less about having that on my truck.

Unfortunately if I go to 1 car, I *need* the TRD ORP because I miss having a moonroof, so I'd be negotiating on that instead.

Also, even at the discounted price of $43, still a rip off, right?

Thanks!

ORP with kdss and sunroof can be had for 39,000 easy. Definitely not worth it.

They look like 5100s with a Toytec adjustable coil-over over them. Maybe that's the difference you're seeing? I had 5100s on my 3rd Gen.

10-4. I'm sure you're right. I just did the 0.85 setting with factory springs. Not a lift, but really changed the looks of my runner.

Personally, I'd rather get the best deal on the base vehicle I wanted and put on the accessories that I wanted. That way you know for sure what you're getting.

Looks like the Toytech ultimate adjustable coil overs I put on my 4R.

Of note, if you can’t install this stuff yourself, you’re gonna pay for it... and the alignment. So figure that into the “how much I can save by doing this myself” amount. Also figure in the “how much is the hassle of getting this stuff installed” into the total. I had to drop off my 4R at a local shop for them to install the lift and do the alignment. They had it for 3 days. So that’s 3 days of hitching a ride to/from work. When I picked it up, I then went to tire shop to buy and install tires on my new rims. So there’s another few hours of waiting time. If it were me to do over again, I’d pay a little extra to have it all put together for me when I drive off the lot. If you enjoy the process, then doing it yourself is a good deal. If you’re like me and have a million other things you’d rather do than wait for stuff to be installed, then drive it off the lot.

That is an important consideration, but I've done the lift on my 3rd Gen before (twice), and so I'm not worried about doing it on a shiny new one with way fewer rusty parts. Hah. Then again, would I rather be doing something else in my free time? I can't lie...yes. Part of that package is the labor for sure, so I guess $3k over sticker for a base TRD ORP isn't way off.

I'm probably going to pass on it anyway and see what I can do to get my 4th gen back to where I like it and think long and hard about keeping my Golf R. Really considering selling it and applying that money to get my pilot's license. Although if they call me tomorrow and offer me $30 for my Golf and knock the price down some...it'll be a tougher decision.

Definitely a toytec kit. Check out their site. I don’t see what spacers you’re talking about though. Maybe you’re talking about the upper metal hat from toytec but overall that’s a decent suspension for a daily driver that isn’t rock crawling or pounding dunes.

As far as price, do some research here and you can come to your own conclusions. Always an extra premium from dealers. Negotiate at will and don’t stop until you’re happy.

Sound advice. I’m talking about the wheel spacers in the pictures. I had the 5100 kit on my 3rd gen and it was alright. I’ve actually grown fond of the OME kit the previous owner put on my 4th though. It does very well off road and isn’t crazy harsh on road. I’m guessing it’s the V8 weight...

If you really need to have it delivered modified, I would first negotiate the price of the vehicle. Then tell them you want it modified. Tell them exactly what you want and have them send the rig over to either Hi Country 4x4 or RSG OffRoad to do the work. (They are working with one of them.) Call whichever will do the work and get a quote for the same work to verify markup is reasonable. You'll get exactly what you want and both Hi Country and RSG do better alignments and the other work than the dealer anyway.

Based on the number of generic modified 4Runners I see around Denver the dealers are selling tons. Arapahoe Toyota had 10 pre modified rigs last time I was in for parts.

I have not had luck with any of the Denver Toyota dealers for maintenance or alignments fwiw.

I paid 38,700 for
My TRD Off Road Premium with moonroof, running birds, remote start and a few other accessories. It stickered for 43,170

If you plan on adding any weight to the front end like a bumper, winch, larger/ aux battery etc... I'd steer clear of that lift. The adjustment collar is on the bottom of the coil, so I don't think you can adjust the height easily while keeping the wheels on like you can with an Icon or king set up where the collars are on top. Probably some lower cost options as well.

It might not be a big deal for what you are or aren't planning, but its something to keep in the back of your mind.

I'd price one out with and w/o the dealer kit, then call Slee and find out how much it would cost for them to do it the way you want. In Jan 2018, Stevenson West was showing a Black 4Runner with "their" suspension for about $7500 more that the TRD Trail that was sitting right next to it on the lot. Slee did my 4th Gen OME BP51 setup for under $6000. Very glad I reached out to Slee.

This shouldn’t be a dealbreaker however, especially if you choose to install this kit on your own… Yes paying the excess premium at a dealer may factor in.

Otherwise it may just take a little bit more time removing the front wheels and adjusting the front coil-overs up a bit on the toytech ultimate system. Just a bit of trial and error is involved that’s it. Are the suspension systems like King and Icon easier to adjust, yes. But way more expensive and unnecessary if you’re not intending to use the vehicle for terrain that those systems are designed for… But for the cost savings if you want a quality entry level lift system, spending a few more minutes by removing the front wheels and adjusting the coil overs on the Toytech system is a good deal. And no big deal.

I purchased a 18' TRD ORD that was MSRP around $39k, got the dealer down to $37k in Colorado Springs. Went to TOYTEC and purchased their 3" complete suspension kit for $1,900 w/ SPC control arms. Also purchased new wheels and 33" tires for around $2400. All in all my setup cost me an extra $4,300. Was it a good deal who knows? Btw I installed the lift at a buddies house in his garage. I was quoted $900 to have the lift installed. Saved me some money... But this way I know everything was installed and I got to choose my wheels and tires not what came from the stealership. $37k + $4.3k = $41.3k roughly I would've been willing to pay before taxes on a lifted T4R at the stealership. Saved some money doing it myself since the ones I saw were going for like 45-50k before taxes.
