Dealership Recall???

I have a 1998 Runner and I was just told that there was a recall on a part for my car something that has to do with the suspension. Does anybody know of such a thing and if I bought the car used can I still go to the dealership for repairs?

It depends what recall you're talking about. If it's the lower ball joint recall for the 4Runners, which started in mid 2005, then you're in luck, because they will honour vehicles even though you're not the original owner. Bad news is (or good news - depending on how you look at it) that your truck (not car : ) doesn't qualify for (or isn't affected by) the balljoint replacement. Only 2001 and 2002 4Runners assembled between certain dates were affected.

Unless you're talking about another recall... See if you can get more info from your source.

ya there was a recall on the suspension for my 97. Cant really remember though but we did have something done on it for a recall.

On certain vehicles, a manufacturing issue with the front lower ball joint could result in premature wear. If the vehicle is operated for an extended period of time in this condition, the ball joint may eventually experience excessive wear and looseness, resulting in increased steering effort, reduced vehicle self-centering and noise in the front suspension. In extreme cases, when the driver continues to operate the vehicle in this condition, the lower ball joint may separate from the knuckle causing a loss of vehicle steering control. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the front lower ball joints.

Yours is a 97 so you must mean the recall on the rear springs. I believe they changed out the rear bump stops, possibly springs as well, because owners complained of an extra rough ride for rear seat occupants and needless bottoming out. Not sure what the number is but I would say your 97 was part of this.

if there was a recall i should of received a letter because i bought my car brand new in 1997 directly from the dealership, yet receive nothing about a recall. :bash:

I wouldn't worry about not getting a letter, I don't think it was all 97's, just certain vin's. Probably a specific production run got the faulty equipment. Now that you know the recall exists go to a dealer and have them run you vin, I'm sure they'll do the work if it is needed.

You can take your older 3rd gen in anytime and if the recall isn't on record as being done and it's got the original srpings they'll take care of it. I had it done on my '97.

contact your local dealer and ask if you give them your vin#, would they be kind enough to check for any open "special service campaigns" that may apply to your vehicle. it`s free money for them from toyota under warranty.

btw, 97 4runners only got new bump stops;

98- got bump stops and springs.

trust me, i just had it done. i bought new stock shocks and springs and had them put them in as well since they were right there, and it made a nice difference in ride.
