Dealing with bump stops...

I'm about to do my suspension lift. I have Toytec Boss coilovers for the front with 550lb springs, LC 8 wraps and Tokico blacks for the rear. I want to keep as much suspension travel as possible, but of course I also want to protect my shocks from bottoming out. I don't have welding gear.

My plan is to install the lift and keep driving on the road with the stock bump stops, to start. First question, as long as I'm not driving over curbs or anything, am I pretty safe doing this without hurting anything?

Second, what should I get/do for bump stops for off road driving, with this setup?

*Also, why don't strut manufacturers just build bump stops onto the shock shaft? Then, they could make the perfect bump stop for the shock, without sacrificing suspension travel.

You can drive no problem on the road, over bumps curbs anything. You need to really flex her out to get even lowered stops to bottom out.

Here are some options you could do, build your own spacers for the stock bump stops, or you can purchase some. I wasnt to good at welding quite yet (still not to good) and I wanted to replace the stock hard stops. Toytec also sells a spacer now. Which look really good

You could go this route, junkyard stops. But they are so soft people have said they dont work that well and just over compress anyways.

Thanks for the great info. I'll look at it all. I had seen the junkyard bump stops done before, but I am unsure about having bump stops that just compress.

I haven't even gotten under the truck to look at the stock bump stop setup. I was hoping I could get some thick rubber and mount it like spacers on the current bump stops, to extend them... Adding thickness as I go. Is that possible to do?

Do I need extended bump stops for the front, or are they only needed for the rear?

Your stock bumps are fine up front- I'd guess 90% of the lifted 4runners on here run them.

You CAN upgrade though. I run the Wheelers Off-road Super bumps for a 2nd gen Tacoma and LOVE them.


I plan to run the same in the rear, but with a spacer... Haven't gotten that far yet.

Junk yard bump stops will work, you just have to account for the compression.... Do some flexing and make sure the bump stop will take the weight of the vehicle while compressed before bottoming out your shock... As long as your not pre-running this method will work just fine.
