Death Wobble at 45-60ish

2004 4Runner, V6, 4WD, 251K miles

Having a terrible vibration of the steering wheel around 45-65 mph. Started one day last week and here is what I've done:

-got the tires rotated and balanced, didn't help
-took to my mechanic for general inspection of front end (he drove and of course it didn't happen) - everything looked good up front
-needed new tires and bought them yesterday - still have the death wobble
-took back to my mechanic who drove and felt it this time around - he also noticed the truck pulls to the left when doing this and does not pull to the left when the wobble is not happeing

I have it at the mechanic now for him to look over the axles, etc...

Any ideas???

WOW.. I thought I was out of my mind. Same issue twice now.

I was driving my 03 4x4 the other day about 60mph, I hit a few little bumps in the road, and my truck tried to kill me. I got the good old jeep deth wobble, that calmed down when I dropped speed..

I racked it up, from what I can tell it looks like it may be the bushings in the lower A-Arms, they are pretty crappy looking.. check yours with and without weight on them and I bet you find the same thing.


Anyone else have this issue????
 
to the OP, when u got new tires did u also get an alignment? also, what brand tires did u have before & now? maybe check the ball joints & grease the drive shaft.

In my jetta this happenend, check your LCA to see if it is jammed back because of the bushing, my lca would just have alot of play in it, never got jammed that it would pull hard though. LCA's generally dont give a wobble, just a pop every once in a while.

I doubt the OP's LCA's are the main/ only problem, the death wobble is probably a bad u joint and the pulling to the left could be a bad alignment, or i guess it could be te LCA, im just doubting its a bad CV considering its not full time 4wd because its the V6.
 
**UPDATE**

My mechanic called and said the driver side brake caliper is sticking and this should be the issue and also explains why it pulls to the left when the shaking starts.

I'll know for sure in a couple hours and will update! Thanks.
 
I agree, not likley a CV in this case..could be a bad ball joint now that I think about it, you could get enough deflection out of a ball joint....

Hard to tell without looking at Op vehicle myself. Pretty sure however, Who ever claimed the CV as cause is wrong.

What u-joints are you talking about? Not sure I follow

My cv axel was snapped in my corolla on the inside of the boot and this gave me the same wobble you guys are explaining.. couldnt tell untill we took the wheel off to move it around..
 
Great post OP. I have the same issue. The steering shakes at 50-60. Would a broken brake caliper cause that even when your NOT hitting the brake?
I did have balance, alignemnt, new suspension. She does drive great BUT I still get a shake in steering wheel (when NOT braking) and when braking.
Besides caliper, should I check bushings or LCA or CV's?
