debate whether to sell or not

So im in a hot debate between what i want to do right now.... i love the 4th gen i just really really really want 4wd. so if i sell it the terms with my dad is i sell it and buy something cheaper (about 7 or 8 grand) and the money we save we put in my college savings. but 7 or 8 grand cant get me another 4th gen. so i will either get a 3rd gen 4wd or possibly a tundra 4wd (00-03) if i get a tundra i probably wont wheel it cause it will be too big of a truck to do anything with besides mud haha. if i get a 3rd gen 4wd i get 4wd and can lift it and yaddy yadda then wheel it but i lose the V8.... my biggest concern but i also gain a lot more capability for the trail.

there is a local orv park about an hour from my house that i think me and my friend are going to go to this weekend.... he has been there before with his dad and their tj. anyways the orv park has some of what they call easy (red) trails that i wanna try and see how capable the 2wd 4th gen really is. if i get stuck i will just get someone to pull me out so i wanna try to push it and see. what do yall think i should do? if it is pretty good i wanna keep it and will put better suspension in it and possibly lock the rear. but i dont wanna do that if i know it wont have a chance. thanks!

2wd 4runners are pretty good , just make sure you turn off your traction before the trail and always give a little gas.

There is a lot to be said for your dad's plan of putting the money into your college savings plan...

3rd Gens are great trucks, and I would happily trade my 4th Gen for one if I needed money for college (plus, I gotta tell you, any one of my friends who had a nice truck going into college and joined one of the frats ended up getting their nice truck trashed from all the tailgates/house moves etc - so getting something a little older will save you some upset in that regard!).

That said - does your 4th Gen have an extended warranty or anything of that sort attached to it at the moment? If it does then there is the cost free repair scenario to account for when making your savings calculations.

3rd gens are sweet, & some guys say they wheel better than the 4th so dont worry about losing the v8 since u can get 4wd. lets face it, whether u mod a 4wd 3rd or a 2wd 4th gen it still will cost its just a matter of how much ya want to spend, i assume if u went with the 3rd g, you'ed want to redo all the mods that u did to the 4th , over again, before doing anything different. so id say, weigh all the cost issues first, before making a decision

I wonder whether you are going to save 8 grand moving from a 2003 2WD 4th Gen to a latter year (say 1997 on) 4WD 3rd Gen....

Depending on mileage and where you live of course a 2003 2WD probably would go for less than a 2001-2002 4WD Limited 3rd Gen (now, it's a trade I would make because I happen to prefer the latter year 3rd Gens to the 2003 4th Gens, even taking into account the V8) but that's something to consider if cash is one of your two main factors in switching.

thanks for the replies.... and i plan on private selling the 4th if i do and buying something with at least 150k on the ticker. i ffind nice 2000 and 1999's for about 7500 all the time.

as for the mods... if i get a 3rd gen 4wd i will re do the lift but no spacers... ill probably save up for either ome or toytec ultimate. also plan on a BL too. i want to run 35's but re gearing it woul take a while after i bolted on 35's b/c of ho expensive it is. so i might just go 3.5 suspension, 1 in. BL, and 33's.

also no one has said anything about the tundra.... i would love to have a truck so i can take it hunting and not have to deal with those stupid ass hitch basket things. also great for throwin stuff in such as fishing rods and bikes and whatever else i need to use it for.... i find myself needing space a lot in the 4runner and i dont have it. as for the cab being a lot smaller then a 4runner it wont bother me cause it will sound amazing if i added just component speakers and i dont really need much room inside anyways.... ill also be able to get a truck box to put things like camping and hunting gear in and lock it up. also fishing tackle.

and as for the saving money for college my dad is all about that. i am very lucky and fortunate enought to say that my parents will be able to pay for my college but i mean an extra 3-4k would be really really nice especially for books and such. and this would be a way to say thanks to my parents by helping them save some money

thanks for all the thoughts and keep em coming. i will really know what i will want to do in a week or two cause im going to take the 2wd and really test its ability.

Keep your 4Runner and buy a used Quad if you want an off-road toy. It will be at least as fun and cost alot less overall. Off-roading street vehicles is an expensive hobby.

Sadly, I think the previous poster is correct...I'm seeing 4WD 2003 4Th Gens going for 12-13 where I live...and that's the selling value. Hate to think what the trade price is.

I believe that if the truck is pretty much stock... if is not over 100k miles yet ... well kept and clean in and out he can probly get 11 or 12k for it . There are people out there that dont really care about 4wd. They just want a great looking and reliable vehicle. Now...if its all beat up with scratches all over... is another story. Pave drivers want something reliable but also good looking. So I suggest you to always have it clean and detailed..shiny tires/rims and extremely clean inside and out and engine bay as well. JMHO Good luck with the sale!

You realize your 4runner is realistically only worth around 10-11 thousand?

You seem to be in a similar situation I am in. I want a truck, but at this point in my life I don't have the means to buy one.

I think you need to be honest with yourself and realize that you are young and are going to have to settle on something that is less than ideal in your mind.

Let's say you buy a 3rd Gen for $8,000. Then with your list your probably looking at another $1,500 at least. At that point your almost up to the cost of your 4th Gen.

Dont waste your time with moddin your 2wd. It isnt worth the money like 10000000 other people have told you. Ive been there. I went from a 2wd 3rd gen to a 4wd 4th. The 3rd gens are IMHO superior to the 4th even after seeing moded 4th gens. I dont think youll miss your v8 as much as you think. Yes you loss the hp but the places you can go in even a stock 4wd 3rd gen are almost limitless.

Clemsonfan - you have a mighty fine truck there so don't be too down on yourself. 1998-00 Limited is probably my favorite runner (though the all black sport version that came out around that sort of time is super awesome) I miss mine a lot and had no plans to trade it in before an encounter with a jersey barrier made the decision for me.

okay thank you to all the know it alls but around here you can sell a 2003 4runner 2wd sr5 for about 13 to 14. people are dumb.... do you not realize that it may seem like there is a LOT of ppl on here and a LOT of ppl that know about cars and how much stuff cost but in reality we are not the majority!! the MAJORITY of everyone out there do not care for 4wd as someone said. also there are SO many ppl that dont care how cheap it can cost to put in your own sound system or install your own brush guard or lift.... ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS THAT IT LOOKS GOOD. i listed my 4runner for 13k on craigslist a while back then took it off cause my dad wasnt ready to sell it yet. it was on craigslist for 13k for 3 days and i had a total of about 12 emails about it.... yes some were BS but more then half were ppl that wanted to come look at it. ppl that arent into cars or dont really care about anything but looks dont want the hassle of installing their own aftermarket stuff. If it looks good and it has something already on it that they want they will most likely want to pay the price your asking.... when i relist it i am going to list for 14k so if they work down some ill still get what i want outta of it.

as for modding..... yes my dad will let me take about 8k to buy something else but he wont give me money to mod.....never has and never will..... thats all on me with my job.

tacoma's in my opinion are way over priced when you can pay a little more for a V8 tundra. if i get a truck i dont want a teeny weeny toy. i want a hoss.... thats just me.

say what you want ill get around 13k for it period.

thanks for all your comments but if your just going to tell me how im not going to get this or that much money for it dont reply. if you have something usefull to say please say it. and if anyone has had experiance with tundra's chime in please

with all due respect.
thanks :)

That made you sound like a huge douche. People took time out of their day to provide you with their opinions (which you solicited) for your question. Don't expect them to take the time to research quotes for where you're selling it. Just cause they're not blowing sunshine up your ass means doesn't you have to get so defensive.

Sounds like you have everything figured out, so sell it, and then post pics of your new ride!

i sold my 04 4runner SE 2wd for 16,500$ and bought a AWD silverado SS,so it is possible to make a profit.(i paid 14grand for the 4runner)
