Decision time, which one 2013 or 15?

Update, ordered the 2015, explanation in subsequent post below.

I know this is my own decision to make and needs to be based on things you can,t answer but curious as to your reaction on the following two choices.

One, a new 2015 limited 4x4 pearl white with no third row and no options other than sliding cargo with msrp of 44.1k being offered at 40,800$ incl dealer fee but excl TTT. In florida, you cant get limited wo either cargo or 3rd row so picked lesser of 2 evils.

Or, the used 2013 4x4 pictured below being offered by a guy at work whom i don,t know. His is pearl and incl running boards, 3rd row seats which i dont need but guess i dont care, navigation and prem stereo, all with 23000 miles.

He is firm on price at 33,300$ and of course, i would have TTT on top of it.

I think the numbers are essentially, 44k otd new or 36 otd for the used.

Just wondering what you think. Both are 4wd

The way I see buying a car is this... The car is only as good as its previous owner(s). Sure certain vehicles have higher reliabilty ratings than others, but that doesnt tell you whether the previous owner banged into curbs all the time or floored it every chance they got or ran it dry of oil, or never even changed the oil, or put the wrong oil in, or crashed it and fixed it without the insurance company knowing, etc...

Speaking from my own personal experience buying used cars, at this point in my life I like knowing that Im the first one to own it and that way I know everything that has been done or has happened to it.

That said, there is always the chance that any used car you get will be great. $8K is a good chunk of money also... That does have to be factored in.

Id say drive them both starting with the new one... That way you have a baseline of how the truck is supposed to drive. Then test drive the used one and compare. Also try to get a detailed maintenance/service history. If one cannot be provided Id inquire about why. Especially if it was done at a dealership...

The 15 is more updated and IMO looks better. Also, you will be getting a new car and can utilize the full term of the warranty versus half (these trucks have 50k mile warranties right?). And you can probably get 2 years free maintenance through Toyota on the new one... Whether that is worth $8k has got to be thought about long and hard. It would be a tough decision for me but I prefer new cars if I can help it.

Thank you formthe quick post, today is decision day. Ny the way, the 13 shows a clear history and all the service has been performed by toyota with oil changes and rotations for the past 2 yrs falling under the free maint that came with it so i think it is a really good veh, carfax clean too, for what that is worth

The updates to the 14+ are subjective but having ridden in both I'm definitely happier I got a 14. $8k isn't pocket change but the comfort of a new car/warranty and knowing everything about its history is worth a few thousand dollars to me. Third row seating sucks unless you absolutely need them which apparently you don't. You can upgrade the stereo for cheap too. Were it me, I'd go with the 15 all day. Also, the 15 won't cost you a dime other than fuel (and mods) for the next couple of years which is nice. YMMV.

Carfax wont show an accident that was not reported to insurance, and sometimes even then it doesnt... Just FYI...

But it sounds like its a good vehicle and you are doing your homework. If you feel comfortable with it then that is what counts! If you do get it post a bunch of pics!!

14+ will have the full skids like the 2010+ TE's have.

15s do not have the fuel computer and outside temp display where the clock is.

I would get the one without the 3rd row, since you dont need it. When the 3rd row is tucked away it raises the floor up and is a pain. My buddy has 3rd row in his and never uses it and cant stand how it raises the floor up.

The updates to the 14+ are subjective

Aside from the objective exterior and interior redesign, I believe the 2014+ 4R's received slight changes to the suspension - either in the spring rates or shock valving. There were aerodynamic changes to the tail lights as well that were supposed to help with stability at interstate speeds.

My 2014 SR5 has less pitch and roll than my 2010 SR5, and feels more stable on the interstate. Of course maybe THAT is subjective...

I'm thinking you've got your sub/objectives reversed.

Sub - biased by personal opinions

Remove emotion from the situation and the 2013 is without question the best deal. Give in to stuff-itis and you will want the new one. Only you can decide if the new one is worth it. There is nothing wrong with saving nearly $10,000 for essentially the same thing.

If your finances are good with the price of the 2015 I think it's the obvious choice. The 2014/2015 had a lot of nice improvements over the earlier 5th gen, and you are getting a brand new vehicle. No questions about the first 23k miles, full warranty, and 2 years of Toyota care.

If you would be stretching at all to get the 2015, then the 2013 is still a great choice. It's only 2 years old, which means Toyota care covered the ncessary oil changes and tire rotations. It still has a lot of warranty... and powertrain is the same.

Where are those located on the 15?

it is in the center info screen between the tack and the speedo...and that is now a programmable readout, you can make it show pretty much what you wish

my 6 cents...if money isnt really an object, go with the '15.

i had the choice between a very well taken care of used '11 and a leftover '14 with a few lesser features (no moonroof, no passenger elect seat, no running boards)...about 1800 diff in price...and i went with the 14; even in a color i wasnt initially fond of. knowing that those miles are all yours, knowing that some guy at work wont be telling everybody "...that USED to be mine", and knowing what you do to it will be all about you is a refreshing sense of ownership...IMHO...

NEW is still NEW...

plus, as soon as that used one has a problem, you will be wanting to bash that guys fingers for not telling you about it.

Earlier this month I bought a 2013 SR5 premium "certified" from local Reno dealer.

I added the comprehensive 7 year, 100,000 mile extended warranty to the truck which after a good inspection appeared to have NEVER been off-road. I was probably the first to take it out in the rocks and sand (three treks so far). The warranty plus the reliability should take me worry free past my 80the birthday.

I managed to get a few bruises on the underside of both the front and rear bumpers. Eventually I'll probably add some protection to the rather poor departure and approach angles - or just do some plastic trimming.

Incidentally, I typically drive about 8,000 miles per year 40% of which is on old mining and ranch trails.

+1

The memory seats alone on the 14-15 would be the decision maker for me. My wife and I have completely different seat position preferences and just pushing a button to our preset is great. If you are the only driver then that will not be an issue. I am also a fan of the new instrument panel. Does the 13 Limited have the doors that unlock by just touching the door handle? My 14 does but not sure about the 13. This is another feature I have grown to love.

Thats a hard choice, I think that seems like a decent deal on the coworkers but its really up to you if you prefer the styling of the recent changes. When I was looking I much preferred the interior and exterior of the update and think it makes it look more modern(I hated the orange interior lighting/gauges of the pre 2014) and with such a high resale I wasn't able to save a bundle.....8k is a bundle and a large sum of money to do other things with (be it 4runner related or not). Let us know what you decide, either way the two are 99.xxx identical -

I'd probably be leaning towards consideration of the '13 and putting the 8-10k in savings into tricking it out myself...

But not 100% sure. If the '13 looked and drove like new I might have a hard time ponying up the extra for the new one... Though I did buy my '14 new :)

Definitely hard decision!

OP this is your total decision.
I can say though that after owning both a 2012 and now a 2015 that the Entune on the 2015 is leaps and bounds ahead of the earlier versions. It is actually not bad now. Before it was very non intuitive. Now everything works and flows much better in regards to phone, radio, XM, aps, navigation.
