Deckplate Mod to K&N FIPK

To those with the K&N FIPK you will be aware of what I am talking about before I post pics, but I did the deckplate mod to the metal shielding around the filter. Towards the front of the shielding near the steering fluid (i think) filler. I got a 4" deckplate and cut out a hole in there and mounted it. I figured since its facing the front of the truck it must increase airflow coming from the front grill. I reset the EFI after doing it and after a full day of driving it seems a little more peppy. I have no tests to prove anything but I figured a lot of air comes through the front grill and this hole will definitely let more into the filter then what comes in the wheel well. I will post pics tomorrow when it stop raining. Let me know what you guys think of this mod. Worst case I can screw the deckplate back in and its back to normal. To those unfamiliar with the deckplate mod here is a writeup by Jason Burtman:

PS. I have been MIA from the forum for a while...been busy with other things...hope everyone is doin great and enjoying their trucks.

why did you do that? you're just letting hot air enter the filter area. that why the heat shield is their. I took my out after 10k mile cause i could not stand the loud noise and lack of low end performance from it anymore and found dirt was entering the pipe .also when I was removing the fipk I notice BLACK TAR like chit all around inside the TB that I never notice b4 I install the fipk.so I was worry and just took it all out. The quite sound is so much better now that I got the stock intake back in! did not notice any different in performance with the fipk off .acutely the 4R run a lot better now with the stock intake at low speed.my MPG went up since I took the fipk out. I usually adv, around 17mpg with the fipk now with the stock intake back on I'm getting around 19 mpg doing the same driving.

Hot air is getting in there no matter what, whether that hole is there or not, since at the connection of the pipe there is a space around the shield. Based on where the hole is and where air comes in the front of the truck through the grill it is definitely getting outside air through this hole. This is all experimentation, as there is no other way to find out about performance upgrades unless you try it. So far it seems to be making a difference, seems more punchy then before so we shall see. Worst case all I have to do is screw the deckplate in and its back to being sealed. No harm no foul.

good for you for trying something new(-ish).

you are in there with some of the pioneers of the tuning industry.

either that or I just get antsy about doing more to my truck...lol...I feel like its more the latter. I haven't done any mods to my truck in a while so had to do something...I knew about the deckplate mod done on older generation 4Runners for increase in performance so I figured what the hell. I am contemplating leaving it like that or getting some type of tubing and running it from the hole to directly behind the grill to isolate the air coming in.

The problem comparing the new to the old is thatwhere your deckplate is;on the older Runners it's right up front and you get the gain from creating the opening but with the Filtercharger you already accomplished what the 3rd gens were doing but now you have created more of a channel with the big hole in what is supposed to limit heat entering the air filter area.
I'd just close it up.

Thanks for the input. What I am gonna experiment with next is getting air intake hose and mount it in that hole and go straight to the front grill area, there is a hole where i can mount it. I will be able to isolate the outside air, not sure if the tubing will heat up and cause the air to get warm or not but it will help with directly channeling the air towards the filter. And like i said earlier, worst case is I screw the deckplate cover back on and its sealed again. I actually have obd II software for my palm that I can experiment with. While driving with it sealed I can measure the Intake Air Temperature and MAF reading and then do it again unsealed at various speeds. See if the readings change. I will try to do it over the weekend. Maybe do it sealed one day and open another day so each time I am going from cold.

Seems to me like you've completely defeated the idea of the heat shield. Remember, invisible radiant heat from the engine will heat up the intake parts and air too. The heat shield not only acts as a shield against convective heat (heated air) it also deflects radiant heat (which is basically infrared light) which works on line of sight. Not saying this is going to make a huge differnce. And I'm not saying that hot air and radiant heat doesn't make it into the intake without the deckplate, but that is the primary purpose of it.

I think your heading in the right direction with the tube from the deckplate to the grille. Remember, in order to have air flow from the grille into the filter area you need to have a pressure differential inside the filter area. This would be much easier if it were confined to a box since the engine vacuum creates an area of low pressure inside the box pulling in outside air. I don't think your going to have the right kind of flow/surface area on the tube to rely on the "ram air" principle to draw cool air from the grille to the filter. The best way to get the max amount of cool air from the grille is to seal up the filter area as well as possible and run the tube into the grille and give it some kind of scoop. A large surface area funneling air into a small tube (like a vacuum attachment). Also the smaller tube (diameter of 1-2") will speed up your flow and make it less suceptible to heat once inside the engine bay.

Good Luck!!:biggrin2:

Thanks for your insight, I will see what kind of concoction I can come up with. I ordered some flexible air intake hose from jc whitney, it has a 2-5/16" inner diameter and is heat resistant. I will then work on mounting it and sealing off around the hose inside the deckplate. I will also try to give it some sort of scoop in the entrance of the hose at the front of the truck. We shall see what I can come up with.

I hope you get that air intake hose idea going because like everybody else said, what you did was not very... it lets the hot air in which lowers performance and could cause a CEL. Once your radiator fan turns on your engine will be suckin some seriously warm air.

I have and AEM intake in my IS and I had to make a heatshield (since it didn't come with one) to prevent the hot air from coming in but you instead bore a hole on the heatshield to let the hot air in?......nice idea but not the kind of air you would like sucked into your engine.

What did you make the heatshield out of?
