Common core has not been changed every five years.

It is just now being rolled out for the first time ever.

All schools which receive federal funding are required to comply in certain ways.

For what it's worth, the math part at least is far from "new". It's the way I've been doing math in my head for decades, and my kids' school has been teaching that way for quite some time.

The only "new" thing about it is that it's now being taught nationwide.

All the ridiculous and almost never-ending standardized testing, however... that's new. :frusty:

This is why many employers seek military veterans to hire IMHO to avoid people with attitudes like many have expressed about the public on this thread. People have a right to express themselves and choose their lifestyle absolutely, this is America.

However, when it comes time for "adulting" show up on time, do your job, improve your craft, be kind to other staff and if you are in a bad mood or depressed fake it anyway keep a positive and productive work environment.

I tell my students "yes, you are special....just like everyone else" all the time. It takes them a while to noodle that out, which is part of the fun.

Common core...yes, a pain in the butt. It seems they are trying to get everyone to think the same way. If you solve a problem different from their method...even if you get the right answer...it is considered wrong. It is all about keep everyone on the same level...God forbid if anyone is a little ahead or behind...everyone has to be the same, it seems. Everyone gets a trophy.

It seems that kids aren't allowed to fail/fall, so they never learn to pick themselves up. They are never allowed to get hurt...mentally or physically. They've banned dodge ball in some schools.

In some areas, they have eliminated 'hands on' science. I remember having a blast (no pun intended) in junior high chemistry setting off hydrogen in a test tube...a pair of googles, a little HCL and metal shavings and a match.

Now, as for picking up and dropping off kids at school...well, I used to walk to school as well. But now are different times...two words 'Amber alert'. I don't blame parents for that. Also, think about all the issues with bus drivers, bus crashes and even your average (distracted) motorist these days...

4th grade teacher broke a ruler over my back because I tried to hide the fact I didnt do the assignment that day. My parents backed her up and taught me the reason she punished me was that I was trying to hide my incomplete work. Same as lying in their eyes.
Bottom line? Get your ass outta bed every day and work hard. Most of all be honest and OWN your mistakes.
All of these coddled young people, the weak minded curriculum and..... um THEORIES, are all by design.
This country better get a clue, and SOON.
Life is tough, and getting through it from day to day in an Adult world? Its not for the pampered.

It's very difficult to start a life on your own after a 100K student debt and ridiculous real estate prices. most students today can forget owning a home, rent alone is easily 2K a month in a decent sized city, and that's not even living in a 'really nice place'. add on a car to commute because you can't afford downtown living, that's another 10K-15K loan for an older camry with 150K miles on it that isn't broken down. student loans in canada I believe are in the mid to high single digit %s, makes it that much harder to repay when you are paying 7% interest on a 100K loan balance. way to make it harder for the young people, interest free student loans should be the standard

I have sympathy for the students of today, the ones that are working hard but yet can't save a penny because simply living is costing them everything. sure they don't need to go to the top schools, but ultimately the chances of them getting a higher paying job increase with better education (not always though). very few fields pay 'high' salaries to new grads, you have to often sweat it out of years before the payoff.

most young folks today are having to choose between pursuing an academic passion (something they truly are interested in) and pursuing a field that gives them enough $ to live without their parents support

on top of this, basic financial literacy is lacking for students. understanding compound interest, basic savings and spending best practices, credit card debt etc. most get into trouble here because they simply don't know. I'm willing to bet half of the people reading this still are unsure about these concepts. the answer of 'well they should research it and figure it out' is not an acceptable solution. We need to teach these concepts to kids all throughout their early education. we need to set them up for success as the cost of living is far outpacing the increase in new grad salaries, it's a losing battle. those of you with young kids, start saving now, even if they were born yesterday. start an education savings account, use the power of compound interest. they are going to need every penny, whether that's for education or to live the dream and own real estate

If you studied something that you were interested in and was marketable you can get a job right out of school. I don't have any sympathy for those that chose Liberal Arts, English, Art History or "Feminist Interpretive Dance Studies". " Would you like fries with that ?" will be their future.

I got Engineering jobs during the summer and worked. People I knew worked paid internships every other semester. It was very common in Engineering.

In Michigan there was a state program that you started when your children were born and you paid a little each month until they were ready to go to college and then university was free. I know someone who had 2 sons, who did this and they both graduated from big name universities with no debt this year.

the internships are a great program. they got me through school debt free as well. I studied mathematics and did all my internships in that field. outside of STEM fields though it's much harder to get by, salaries are generally much lower out of school. we have a few programs in canada to help savings and help students with their schooling too. however, it's by no means 'free'. it's a student loan program which is not interest free and there's a savings vehicle that the government will match $ up to a measly amount per year. a top 2 year master's program in canada is easily $50K - $100K on top of undergraduate. it's very difficult to cover that working internships for 2 years

we need people in all fields of study, not just math, or engineering, or science. people to work at museums that children go to on school trips, to host summer camps for kids, writers for books and movies that we watch, actors and film crews. most of those are not STEM graduates, and that's ok. diversity in academics should be encouraged

I approve of this approach. I also have friends who have more than two children. They raised them with the understanding that they could not pay for their education for everyone. That's why the eldest son went to auto mechanics right after school. But there is a moment that is still present when hiring young people. Many managers see them as yesterday's children and cut their salaries. You need to have strong nerves and strong teeth to snatch your money from the clutches of HR managers.

Sure, I remember the constant threat of nuclear war, The Day After, etc, but give the kids of today some credit. They are resilient in ways the OP never envisioned however many years ago this thread was created....hopefully they will forgive their forebear's greed and shortsightedness.
