Dept of Treasury Scam

Was driving on a road trip to Ft. Collins yesterday when I received a call from Washington DC.

I normally hang up on calls from numbers I don't recognize, but I have worked for the Feds for a few years and sometimes get random calls from our juggernaut of departments.

Yesterday's call was from Treasury Agent "Kevin Jackson" who despite having a very American name spoke with a heavy accent--kind of like the all-American names on tech support these days.

"Kevin" was calling me to tell me that a "Federal Arrest Warrant" was issued in my name because of tax fraud over the past two years--I have a professional accountant and tax lawyer do my taxes, so I tried not to laugh at this.

I, incredulously, asked "Kevin" what laws I had broken, Kevin replied "The US Constitution and Department of Treasure[sic] statures[sic]."

I then asked "Kevin" what my mailing address was. He responded that I was living in Gaines-vi-lay (Gainesville). A Federal agent cannot pronounce a city name present in several states, and very American? Oh my...

Very concerned at this point, I asked "Kevin" what I could do. He responded that if I pay my fines, we can come to some resolution.

I asked him how the Federal Government didn't send me a certified letter about my alleged "tax crimes against the US Constitution." He replied that they don't have my address, which is odd, because as a former Federal employee, the Government knows EXACTLY where I live, and I have been receiving my W-2's for vacation payouts and TSP for the last year.

Kevin seemed very flustered and asked me that do I not know what a "Federal Arrest Warrant means?" I asked him why is the Treasury Dept calling me from DC and not from an IRS field office?

He replied "I never said I'm calling from DC."

At this point I figured he had realized that I was wasting his time and not getting anywhere. I told him that he'd be hearing from my tax attorney and accountant.

"Kevin" never called me back.

You are going to jail...in India...all over cow taxes....just you wait and see.

You might be surprised at how many people fall for these scams, then again maybe not as there are a ton of dumbass people in this world and as the old saying goes... "a fool and his money..."

The other one that gets people on a regular basis is the phone call from a relative that's randomly in jail in another country and desperately needs bail money. Victim relative is told not to tell anyone because it's embarrassing for the person in jail and somehow that doesn't raise any red flags. Nor does the fact that the relative is randomly in Jamaica when you saw them a week ago and they definitely didn't mention any trips abroad in their future plans.

The other one that gets people on a regular basis is the phone call from a relative that's randomly in jail in another country and desperately needs bail money. Victim relative is told not to tell anyone because it's embarrassing for the person in jail and somehow that doesn't raise any red flags. Nor does the fact that the relative is randomly in Jamaica when you saw them a week ago and they definitely didn't mention any trips abroad in their future plans.

I got one of these saying [insert name here] is in jail in Paris and needs 2000 Euros for bail.

I responded that [insert name here] is an ass, and can rot in jail.
