Destroyed Front Diff

So I posted a few weeks back that I had broken something in my front diff while out wheeling.

Basically, I was climbing a ledge, the front driver tire came off the ground under throttle and then slammed back down and popped quite loudly. After that, every time I would put any load on it in 4wd, it would click and pop. Drove it 30 miles home, pulled the plug and determined by the chunks of teeth that came out that I needed a new front diff.

I got everything replaced 2 weekends ago and finally got the time to tear apart the old one. Here is what I found :crybaby:

wow, thats the first front carrier I've seen grenade, first time seeing the spider gears take the plunge as well usually it's the ring gear teeth that give out first.

did you go back in with factory or something else

Yeah, I just bought a used front diff with 9x,xxx miles for $175 and put it back in. Quick, easy, cheap.

Same thing happened to me. The spiders are pretty weak in our front diffs

My friend in Australia said most hard core off roaders in Australia use NISSAN 4x4 axles installed into their toyota trucks. Now I believe it!

lol I had to go through the ordeal last year in october. wound up with ARB's front and rear I pity the rock that tries to break my axles again lol

Had the same thing happen to me (mostly mine was the pinion gear). Gave me an excuse to the wife to re-gear and dual ARB lockers! :biggrin2:

Out of curiosity what was the drive like home? Did you go slow or just continue on at speed?
I ended up being fortunate enough to have a guy with a trailer there to tow mine home so I drove his rig. I was 3hrs from home at hwy speed.

That's the second pinion I've gone through, in 2 years. And the ARB is destroyed as well. gonna be 1500 for a new one from ECGS. :\

Too bad no one really warranties thier shit anymore.

wait so ECGS isnt going to warranty that? they claim a five year warranty on all ring and pinion installs. your not running tires taller than 35" are you?

I need to take it up to them and talk to them about it. From what I was told on the phone, they would have to look at it and "see if it was abuse that cause the failure. If that's the case, then we won't warranty it."


Funny thing is, I wasn't even off road when I happened. I was making a left turn.


Knowing my luck, they aren't going to warranty it.

Either way, I'm still going to be out a shit ton for the locker probably.

The drive home was fine. It was getting off the trail back to the road that was the trick. haha

I didnt notice any issues on the drive home. I did take it a little easy but was still going 45-50 most of the way. The next day running errands to get a few things, I did notice it was starting to want to feel like it wanted to bind slightly so I parked it and didnt touch it till I got my new one.
