Just wanted to follow up on my other thread. I bought that 4Runner and it was the front u-joint that was bad. I had intentions on replacing both u-joints but after struggling and cussing and busting the end of the caps off trying to press them out then having one of the bearings fall down while trying to press the new one in over and over, I called it fixed after the front one was up to snuff. The back one had no slop and was good to go anyways but it would have been nice to lick both of them while I had the shaft off.

Thats why they have grease fittings. I am glad this fixed your problem and hope you many enjoyable miles in your new to you 4 Runner.

Not all u-joints have built-in zerks....some of them need to be pulled and the cap packed with grease.

I found one quite similar to that in my rear driveshaft eariler this year. No needle bearings, full of dust and the shaft was badly worn. I replaced it with a greasable joint and everything is good again!

AFAIK all of the OEM joints have zerks.

Hummm....IIRC, the one that I pulled out did not. Now, it might have had a needle fitting, but I dont remember it having a zerk....I could very well be wrong though....my memory is fading the older I get.

There is a TSB floating around the web for greasing of drivelines, has locations and type of grease to use. I've got it home for sure, I'll post it up late this evening.

The one I removed did not have a grease zerk and it's replacement (a Chinese Autozone Duralast Gold LLT part) did not have a grease zerk. It did say on the box that it was prefilled with a lifetime supply of grease. That didn't exactly give me a warm fuzzy feeling but we shall see about its quality.
