Determining Build combo

I have a planning question in regards to selection of suspension / tire / the tundra brake mod. I've been looking at a 2002 4runner 4x4 that is in need of some major mechanical work. As a bit of a back ground plan I'd say this would be more of a pavement queen/dd ( 90% ) to off road ( 10%) where I would like some lift to fix both the common rear end sag and to give a bit more of a stance/lift. If there are threads to this end I'd appreciate a link, thanks

What max tire size can be installed with out doing body/ fender well mods? How do I go about selection of suspension to go with the proposed tire size etc. I know this may be kind of vague atm, I'm trying to fight my way through a suitable comprise fix for this 4runner before I shed some cash :-)

Do a search, plenty of threads covering this stuff in detail with your different options for lifts/tires. Come back with more specific questions about something later on if needed.

Unner Yes there are hundred of threads of combinations a search would find, not what I asked, I asked how you determine what you selected and what you establish as "base line", which is what Absolam has done in his build thread, he provided the finished product so to speak.

Thanks for the link to Absolam's thread, read it last night, good info on breakdown of build types for different applications.

Here's an example of what I'm looking at for a start, I'll use the DD as a baseline build in this example, with this scenario I would like a lift to fix the sag and add some height (not a significant lift). This might mean no UCA modifications just suspension maintenance as required based on existing wear and tear. But if I add that the ride would also be used for overland / camping part of the time, it may require that more lift be added, a larger tire size resulting in clearance issues, beefing up the suspension to handle the added stress of the larger tires, additional component weight, etc. This total process ends in compromises as we can get to extremes even in the DD scenario if we add more weight we need more power, meaning engine conversions to V8 for example to power back up, which means larger brakes for the added weight or towing.
This is all a matter of expenses when we get to the bottom line, so if I run into 20K build, I might just as well buy a new to order vehicle with the bells and whistles and not have a 15 year old as a new dependant LOL.
So anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

I determined to go with a 3" lift since it's the most common. I went with 285/75/16 tires since it was also a pretty common size.

Here's 31 pages of lift information.

Everything you're asking is personal preference, and each persons answer can be different. I run a 3" Toytec lift in front, OME 891's in the rear, no UCA's, 285/75/16 tires, and no spacers. I have no rubbing, or any other issues. Some member with 285/75/16 tires will have rubbing issues, but not everybody.
 
I went with my lift more or less on budget. I found a killer deal for the Tundra TRD from coils, and used OME 890's on this forum. All I really needed after that was shocks. Got the Tundra 5100's based on lots of good reviews.

Reason for the lift was a refresh on the suspension. (mine was original w/ 200k ) So I needed something anyways. Also wanted to run a little bigger tire (still trying to decide between 265 or 285) And I'm also adding sliders and armor underneath and a cargo box in the rear. I didn't want it to sag too much w/ the added weight. (might have to step up to the 891 in the rear after all that... but for now it's what I wanted and rides great!

FWIW, I've got the Tundra 5100's on the first perch and the 890's in the rear and it gives me the rake I was looking for.

And as with all lifts, like it's been said before. YMMV. It's all about your preference. Some people have done their suspension so many times, they can change out coils with their eyes closed trying to find their idea of perfect.

I trusted [MENTION=63060]rickashay[/MENTION] with his review as I was choosing between OME or the TRD suspension. Obviously, mine is different based on what I was able to find in my price range. I also don't have bumpers... I chose the 890's because I didn't want my back end so high with the LC coils. OME vs TRD

I don't see a build thread, and I don't want to muddle up the OP's thread, but I realized this info could be useful to him as well; how do you like the Toytecs up front combined with the 890's in the back? What shocks are you running?

The 891's suck, and I can't wait to get rid of them. They were sagging after 100 miles, and don't support the weight they claim to. I'm going to be switching out my Bilstein D558/Eibach combo in the front for some King's. Most likely switching out the Bilstein rears to King's as well.

My thought is that you are high if you think you can order a 2015/16 Toyota with all the bells and whistles for 20k
