Dexron 3 vs Dexron 6 in Transmission

I can purchase Toyota OEM Dex 3 fluid from local dealer. I'm using it in my power steering.

Some say you should upgrade to the Dex 6 in our transmissions. Is this good info?

If it matters, I am only gonna use Dex 3 or 6.

I think my 97 uses DII. The Red Valvoline Full synthetic is compatible with DII. A gallon is $25 at Walmart.

Best word of advise.... Use what the manual says you should use. They manufactured your vehicle to a certain set of standards. Better standards can come out, but guess what... your vehicle wasn't built to those "better standards"

Plenty of people use Dex VI in the A340 trans. I have the last few changes with no issues. Slightly snappier shifts, and that's not a bad thing.

I'll be moving to Valvoline Maxlife from now on (red bottle) to simplify things - our van uses that fluid too.

Dexron VI is backwards compatible to Dexron III. I use Dexron VI in both my 4Runner's power steering systems without any issues. Also used it in my last 4Runner automatic transmission without any issues either. I would buy whichever is cheaper and not worry about it.

Make sure to clean your power steering reservoir screen if you can. I can guarantee it's dirty and clogged.

I think Dex VI is more readily available to me locally but I like to use AMSOIL multi-vehicle ATF or the Valvoline MaxLife ATF. I think there's a SuperTech Dex VI ATF that's available, but honestly, I'm going to use whatever is the most cost efficient.

For what it matters, Replaced my trans recently with a Yota1, arrives empty, called Nick about what he recommended to fill with, said to use Toyota T-III, using it and it drives like a dream.

I wouldn't be opposed to that, I used to run PUP in my engine for a few years and had great results with it. I'm not sure I've seen that stuff locally though.

I mostly use Vavoline maxlife in my rigs.

Nothing wrong with that at all.. I don't run it because 3 gallons if it is quite expensive anymore.

Plus it's a conventional fluid and not synthetic. That would be the thing for me. I prefer to have a synthetic fluid in there.

It’s not easy to find. My friends trans shop is also a Pennzoil Quick Lube and they stock it.

When I put a tighter torque converter in my Cummins in 1996 the trans shop used multi vehicle. It had 180,000 miles on it and still chirped the tires WOT on 1-2 upshift.

Also used it in some GM transmissions.

So I must be doing something right with regular drain and fills. The shifting feels smooth, but I've also only driven this thing for the past 10 years so I don't really have much to compare it to, either. I'll keep doing what I'm doing as long as I get good results.
