Hey everyone...


Can miss adjusted valves sound like this? We think we may have adjusted them more open then they should instead of .008 they may be .010 or .011........, and the rocker arms are loose causing the knocking.. what do you think???



Here is a video i took, of the engine running at idle, and this knockin sound. Remember, this is just after a valve adjustemnt.....

Wow... That sounds terrible.

Did you pull the head and pan or did you do it the "squeeze it in way"?

Are you sure you didn't put the bottom sprocket on backwards?

I know it will eat the hell out ot a chain if you do.

Steel guides or an oem or aftermarket plastic set?

Ok , an update.

I just took it over a co-workers hous, Ex Gm mechanic. He said for certain, that it's the valves, Too loose. My buddy adjusted them, but he adjusted them too loose. 8 thou for intake valves, 12 thou for the exhast is what they should be.

In short, The rocker arms are not tight enough causeing her to sound like a diesil.

Tommorow we are adjusting them, i will for sure post a video of the results of the valve adjustment.

Anyone else adjust their valves and have a noise show up??? let me know. !!

How did you make out with this problem? I have a similar noise although not quite as loud as yours. I am also burning a fair amount of oil. I adjusted the valves and it seemed a little better (noise) but then I realised that I did it with the engine cold. I have not yet had the oppertunity to re-do it.
 
Thanks for reminding me !!!

The sound is completely gone... and it was a simple and overlooked step during the valve adjustment and timing chain replacement.

The valve cover, with new bushings and gasket, is only to be torqued down when cold, evenly to 40 inch pounds "Not Alot".
What happend was, my buddy put the cover on and reef'd on them, untill you couldn't see the rubber bushings... and the rocker arms were beating off the oil baffle, or maybe even the side of the cover.

Anyway, what i did was, Let her warm up.... then backed them all off "the valve cover nuts x 4" then listend, in amazement as the deisil sound toned down, then died off complety. I was shocked it work, but that cover can't be on there too tight. I backed them all off, then brought them all to 40inch pounds with a TW.

It caused such a pain in the ass, especially after doing 2 valve adjusemnts thinking we did it wrong, only to find out we ham-fisted the cover on...lol:cool: :) :happy bda
 
Didn't get a chance to work on the truck today. Busy building a shed. It looked all lonely in the driveway being ignored. I will probably have to wait till Monday to try adjusting them. Got to finish tearing apart my original motor (kind of hydrolocked it). The motor in it now is in the high 300kms. Only paid $300 for it though. Just need it to last me a little bit longer. If there is anyone in the Ontario area with a good cheap 22re please let me know.
 
4Runners are lasting forever...

should see my uncle's 86, every front suspension component has a thick layer of rust on it, i opened the door, it swung out, and down...lol but she run's good...lol

He just uses it for bootin back and forth to work.
 
I had an '84 sr5 2wd years ago. I parked it when it needed it's 5th body job. Wish I kept it now though, the motor ran just fine. Rust is just a way of life up here. I would love to park the 4Runner for the winter and not have to deal with the salt but having a truck that will get through anything was the reason I got it in the first place.
