Did I get ripped off?

I recently got a Tune Up and had the air and fuel filters replaced on my 2000 4Runner. It was at 87,000 miles and I hadn't had either one of these replaced since I bought it at 24,000 miles over 3 years ago.

1. Was it necessary to get the Tune Up and replace both filters? At what mileage are these usually done?

2. I also just had one oxygen sensor replaced - guy charged me $296 for the part. Was this too much? Could I have gotten the sensor for cheaper?

Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I'd change the air filter more often. I'd start inspecting it around 20K, and change it between 20K and 30K miles. I'd say that the fuel filter is good for 65K-75K, so I'd say changing it was appropriate, especially if it's never been done.

There isn't much to "tune up" on these computerized fuel-injected engines. Toyota truck V6's are supposed to have new plugs every 30K miles. That's about it, except for the usual fluid changes. If you had a problem with misfire or air/fuel mix, the computer would raise a code and turn on the check engine light.

I've never had an O2 sensor changed, so I can't say if that's good or bad.

Air filter you can inspect. I think every 30k is normal.

Not sure about the fuel filter. 90k sounds correct.

Did you have a check engine light? There is no reason to repalce a working o2 sensor. You can check on partznet.com for the price of an O2 sensor. They aren't cheap, can be difficult to replace, and easy to break.

Is that 02 sensor made out of platinum? I don't think they are nearly that expensive. Maybe $100, but not almost $300 (talk about dealer markup)

I just replaced two on my mothers' Mercury and they were $65 each. I really can't see them being more than $100. But you could check by calling partznet and price one and get a real number instead of my speculation.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, my check engine light was on and the code indicated an oxygen sensor.

With the mialage mentioned if the air filter hadn't been changed if defenately needed it as was a good time to do the fuel filter.

Neither are hard. What did they charge you for labor for changing the filter if you don't mind me asking?

The HO2 sensor should be less than a hundred bucks at a parts store although at one of the dealors I worked at they marked up parts 300% so if you had it done there that may be the case why it was so expensive.
