Did I mess my Tranny up?!?

I was at my friends house and pulled in behing his truck on a steep incline and I didn't give it enough gas and my 4runner started to roll backwards and then I suddenly heard a clicking sound along with some other sounds. I saw some light on the right come on but I was too shocked/worried to look. I pushed the brakes in and slowly put it in park. I've since driven it and it seems fine but is this normal???? I hope I didn't mess anything up. Thanks for your time.

No worries. That is the HAC kicking in. HAC = hill assist control. It is supposed to make that kind of noise and a dash light should have lit up (which you saw in your peripheral vision).

Its normal, your truck has an anti roll back feature that will apply the brakes (and make some weird noises when doing so) to keep you from rolling back down a hill. It's intended to allow you time to move your foot from the brake pedal to the gas pedal when stopped on a hill It's called Hill Start Assist.

Yup. It starteled me the first time it happened to me. In my opinion the idea is pretty cool.


What are the criteria that enable it? I know putting it out of drive or pressing the brake seem to disable it if I remember correctly.

Welcome to the site!

You need to take some time and sit down to read the owner's manual. In doing so you will find many other features that you may not be aware of, such as hill decent assist and how the sunroof's spoiler adjusts at different speeds, etc.
