Did my exhaust today, and a magnaflow gripe :(

Out of boredom im modding my 4runner... I dont floor it, I dont tow other than on occasion, and I dont want it any louder, but I do like good fuel economy and im handy with a welder! Worse off, our dyno is only 2wd so since I have a awd limited, im just gonna say it feels better!

I was going to do headers but decided between the 125K mile toyota premium warranty, and the fact that I dont want it louder with the cats gone, I passed for now (but if I get bored enough, im probably going to do some Thorleys!) So today I had just planned on doing the Magnaflow cat back (gripe to come shortly) and I was going to build a custom Y-pipe from the rear cats to where the magnaflow starts and add a Magnaflow 2 into 1 muffler. Magnaflow goodies showed up today so after work, I tossed my truck on the rack, removed all the stock stuff and cut the Y-pipe out at the rear cats (had no idea it was double wall on the driver side, even more pathetic!) and ran a 2.5 inch crossover, then expanded the pass side to 2.5 inch at the cat (I know its pointless since the cats are the pinch point, but I planned ahead and did a dual 2.5 into single 3 inch muffler in case I did headers, but at least wanted to get rid of the crappy stock "Y" and crushed crossover).
Got everything tucked up and welded, turned out PERFECT! Now to put the magnaflow 3 inch cat back on... only I open the box and find out its 2.5 inch :rant::rant::rant::rant::rant:

A friendly call to Magnaflow and I get a tech who reads me back just what the website and description says... 3 inch muffler, 3 inch mid section and tubing, 3.5 inch tip. Then pulls up the schematic... "oops, I guess its 2.5 inch". I ask him what do I do now, I have my truck torn apart and the ONLY reason I bought the magnaflow system is because its 3 inch, and the cost of U-bends and my time to make the multi angle over axle section all mandrel was just too much to the point where id pay a few bucks more to have something bolt in. His answer... "well better call your distributor and you can return it to them". I said its not their problem you put incorrect information on your website and catalog, and im already out the shipping to me from Magnaflow, and its not cheap to ship it back only to have to order a few Ubends, muffler, tip, hangers etc, and have to drive around with half an exhaust until it all shows up. He again said just contact your distributor, we cant do anything for you.

Unfortunately I pretty much strictly use magnaflow mufflers when I custom build stuff, but im pretty ticked off at how worthless this guy was and didnt offer to either pick up the freight, compensate me, or do anything other than pawn off his issues to our distributor, whom had absolutely no fault in this.

So anyone looking for a cat back... the magnaflow is only 2.5 inch And only comes in side exit, so I had to build a tail section too since mine is straight rear exit! The display on their website shows it going straight out the back, but upon closer reading it does say rear side exit, so cant blame them for that one.

On the upside, the truck is barely louder than stock with a slight rumble at wide open or heavy load, but freeway, street and idle is just as quiet a stock... might even be a bit smoother at idle! I will snap some pics if anyone wants them, I was just pissed about everything and wanted to get it done and really didnt plan on having to build a *****in 3 inch mid section only to have it neck down to 2.5.

You should file a complaint with the BBB.
Alert other consumers.
Maybe Magnaflow will see the error of their way.
If nothing comes of it you have noted the issue with the BBB and cautious consumers can take notice.

If there was a possible good outcome of all that, id consider it, but they arent going to build me a 3 inch system, I dont want to get my distributor dragged into this, and since ive already installed the system, its not like im going to get a refund. I just figured at least with this thread, others who considered the system will see its only 2.5 and make their decisions accordingly. There was a Borla system in the classifieds here I wanted pretty bad but the sole reason for not buying it was I wanted 3 inch... could have saved a couple hundred bucks and ended up at the same outcome!

I've found that support of companies like Magnaflow for "dern eemports" is pretty spotty.

Every Ram, GM, and Ford pickup and muscle car out there gets a Magnuhflooow glass cat back muffler the SECOND Billy-Bob Duke Joe-Bobby Jr. drives it off of the lot. Some redneck muffler shops literally have dozens of brand new exhaust systems for American trucks out back they'll sell to you for pennies. In some Southern towns, it's not really YOUR truck until you have that burbling, farting exhaust--how loud depends on how much of a jackass you want to be (it also correlates pretty well with how many rebel flag stickers you have on the back--the boys who actually fly the Stars and Bars from their pickup bed don't even mess around with mufflers at all).

Not really sure how many 4Runner owners feel the need to make V8-ish noises from their V6, but I'm guessing Magnaflow doesn't really think that they need to sweat the details to make them happy.

TL;DR: don't expect Magnaflow to give a damn.
