Did Toyota Resolve Issues That Plagued The 4th Gen?

Just wondering if the 5th Gen owners are getting the driveline thump/bump/clunk and the sulfur smell that the 4th Gen owners have had to put up with. Or, did Toyota finally address these annoyances.

ok so far with almost 10K and no bump on mine.

Only time I had the sulfur smell was when I first got and floored it with the back window down. Pretty sure all new vehicles do that except most don't have rear windows to let the exhaust in to smell it. Hardly any vehicles have functioning rear windows these days. Just be glad 4Runners still have them.

I put DT headers with pre cat deletes on and never smelled it again.Easy fix for that though is to route the exhaust out the side behind the rear tire as the air flowing under SUV's tends to roll back up and over, thus bringing in fumes .

The drive line thump issue is actually coming from the telescoping rear driveshaft. It can happen on all trucks, not just Toyota, that have the same set up. IMO.... 99% of the time it comes from poor maintenance. Manual says to lube your driveshafts every 5k miles and usually gets passed over at dealerships. I've always done my own maintenance and NEVER had the problem with over 100k on my last Runner and almost 30k on this one. Worked on a friends F150 years ago that had it and ended up changing the driveshaft it was so bad.

I never had the drive line thump either but I grease my drivshaft regularly. Also never had the sulfur smell or any other problems.

Can anyone tell if they changed the design on the front calipers? Is there form of shielding for instance to prevent salt spray getting into that top inner piston?

Does anyone with a FSM know if the t-case still has that silly plastic seal on it or does the manual engagement on trail and sr5 get rid of the leak issue now?

No problem with 4th gen or 5th gen

I drove a 2005 4th gen for 190,000 miles and I current have a a 5th gen for 5,000 miles. Neither have ever had the sulfur smell, or cluncking you cited.

My Thump/Bump started @ about 6k miles. It's mild when approaching a stop while under 10 mph, worse when stopped and creeping forward. I'm crawling under there tomorrow to grease.
No sulfur smell!
Love that 4runner..

Nope. I had it on my 07', full time AWD Runner and I'm not gonna lie... because of how much I was paying, it would get on my nerves every now and again. I know Toyota said it shouldn't affect performance but come on, you'd expect a $34K+ car to not do that.

Driveshaft Clunk

I had it on 5 GMC 1/2 ton truck in a row. Using a high moly content grease was only a partial fix. My new 4 Runner is too new to know yet. My only concern with my new 4Runner is that if I start greasing the driveshaft,---, how much moly grease will eventually work its way into the transmission fluid as it mixes with the tx fluid on the tailshaft of the tx. Transmission fluid is supposed to keep this area lubed but its a dilution process. I hope there are not any English teachers reading that run on sentence.:)

This can not happen. The 2 parts are seperated by the u-joint and flange.

Yeah, that just doesn't make sense. Not an issue.
