Diesel 4 runner swap on Ebay....

Came across this ad on another forum:

Same truck, the guy who built it is an authority on these swaps, so I'd feel really good about the truck if I was looking to buy.

My concern would be less on the swap and more on the idea of spending $15k on a 4Runner with that many miles on the body.

Im not seeing how this could be worth anywhere near $15000 with the miles on it. Dont know much about the 1kz-te turbo diesel. Im sure its a very dependable engine, but so is the stock 5vz-fe. And it makes roughly 55 more hp and 15 more ft-lbs torque than the 1kz-te without the intercooler. In this case, Im not seeing any practicle reason to spend that much money on a diesel swap, or pay $15K for this vehicle, when you could get a good 3.4 for much less. We're not talking about a duramax here. Maybe there's something big Im missing. But with the miles on that thing, I think his asking price is pretty crazy. Even if you got 30mpg, you would never get your money's worth relatively when you could pay $5-7K on a stock 3.4 with well under 200k miles on it.

He also has it on Craigslist in Marietta (right near me!). The estimate of 24.5 mpg on the highway under 65 tells me it's not worth the swap for fuel savings. I get 20 on the highway with my 2000, and I do NOT keep it under 65 or even 75.

Not sure why, but that diesel doesn't seem to be the mileage beast diesels usually are.

i think alot of you guys also overlooked the laws with registering a vehicle with a Japan domestic market engine swap. the smog laws are more strict in the us so it also maybe a reason why he can't register it for street use.

In Southeast Asia, All the Surfs and Hilux's come diesel. It is the only way to get them. My friends would love to swap their diesels for the gasoline counter part.

If it got 30+ MPG's, i would do the swap to diesel but only 24 on the hwy is not that great.

Plus Diesel is more expensive then super unleaded. the the cost per mile averages the same as gasoline.

US Emission laws only really impact California, New Jersey and New York. Outside of that few areas have SMOG testing and inspections.

I don't think anyone has ever prosecuted for a private engine swap.

There are 13(ish) counties around Atlanta (including Cobb, i.e. Marietta) that have emissions testing. That could quite likely be the issue.
