diesel 4-Runners/pickups for sale

Everyone thinks Toyota diesel 4-Runners and pickups are impossible to get in Canada & USA but that's not necessarily true,see my complete info below.

The way the price of gasoline (petrol for Australians) is going I
suggest that everyone convert their Toyotas to diesel as they are
more:

fuel efficient
higher torque
waterproof
simpler
reliable
safer
can idle all day long
less overheat episodes
can burn bio diesel or vegetable oil (without glycerin)

Well to help everyone dismiss the myth that Toyota diesel pickups & SUV's are rare in USA & Canada I have included below a list of very resourceful links that contain places to buy diesel engines/parts and complete rigs.

should I get a diesel?

Hope someone reads this...
I live in Patagonia Argentina...here, the vast majority of 4runners (in fact, called Hilux SW4 here) are manual diesels (3.0 litres, most of them with mechanical injection, and fewof them from years 2001 to 2003, with electronic injection).

These diesels have not been sold with auto transmission, only manual versions.
So, there are many buying options for these, ranging between 10k usd to 22k usd.

Then, there are very few 2.7 petrol 5 gear manual ones, and aven fewer 3.4 v6 automatica ones (these are extreemly rare here...let alone the limited version, which I have seen only once).

I want to buy one, for everydya use bur alos for overlanding in extremely
remote areas where you probably would'nt find more people, let alone have phone signal.
As much as I know the diesels are more reliable, but I also know how loud they are...
For the transmission, I know that manual ones are way cheapear to maintain.

The thing is:
That single (and very rare here), Limited automatic v6 that I know, is now for sale.
It has 160k miles on it, and its black...pretty stock.
It has some differentials leaks, the steering case is ready for the thrash bin, transmission oil needs replacement....and has aesthetic things to be improved on its paint and interior...no rust though.

It makes a rattling noise which increases its frequency when accelerating....no idea what that could be. It sounds more like a metal sheet is clapping with someting. This V6 Limited, costs about 13k usd.

For the same price, or even a bit less, I have plenty of buying options in diesel / 5 gear manual trim, with no leaks nor strange noises.
Also there is an 2,7 4 cylinder manual, base trim with 120k miles available for the same price.

Any suggestions? Which would you get? Would you preffer to loose some V6 engine power and get instead a noisier, weaker but reliable diesel engine + manual tranny? Or perhaps a 2,7?

I owned small diesel engines in boats. They are different from gas and require careful maintenance. Clean fuel is vital. Fresh fuel is vital. Bacteria grow in diesel and will clog your fuel filters. There are anti bacteria additives you can put in your tank.
Water in fuel can score the fuel pump innards and wreck injectors, so in addition to particle filtration (for bacteria goo& rust) you must have moisture/water filters. Additionally you must trust you fuel supplier to maintain their storage tanks.
Mechanical engine components are usually built to high tolerances and can be expensive. But can last thousands of hours of operation with proper maintenance.
I had a passing fancy to own a diesel pickup. Maybe some day......

Thanks!!! Here in Argentina, we do not have issues with old toyota diesel egines...contaminated diesel only became an issue after year 2005, when they introduced the 3.0 D4D engines, which are common rail and require pristine euro diesel to avoid damaging the injectors.

I understand the diesel thing and have owned two RAM diesels which were totally overkill for my use, but I bought them just to say I have a diesel massive truck and thought it was cool. Well, those days are gone and owning another diesel would not be to my liking, not that the Toyota diesel are not a nice vehicle in Australia, or other parts of the world where diesel is king. Small diesels in today's vehicles produced here in the U.S. are slowly going away, I assume the added cost of the vehicle and what you get for your money is just not working for the American market. I looked at a Jeep Wrangler diesel and the service department at the dealership told me that if I wasn't going to drive it some 100 per day and at highway speeds it would be in the service department every 3-4 months, the diesel is designed for use and not a soccer moms' vehicle, ie. it's designed to be driven. The reasons given by the original poster for a diesel are probably correct in theory, but the average American driver wouldn't see a diesel as a better buy over a gas vehicle. Several U.S. manufactures have offered diesels in their product lineup and many have been removed for the obivious reasons.

I had to privately import from Japan to get a petrol (Gasoline) 4th gen. They only sold diesels here on the official market, and that stopped in 2002 or so. By this stage they are all complete heaps compared to what you can get from Japan.


That's how much I didn't want a modern diesel.
