Diesel Sounding Gasoline Engine

In the past 2000kms, I have noticed an increasing valve ticking from my top end.
Now I have read other posts about getting valve lash done and that the sound remains the same.

Is it a waste of time and money to get the valves adjusted or will it actually give an audible difference?

No it has sounded like it for a while and only after a long drive.
Im thinking of replacing the cap and rotor as this may be affecting it as I am getting a ping too every now and than, and I am using high octane fuel with a Lucas Top cylinder cleaner every fill

What year is your 4runner? It could be that the timing chain needs to be tightened up.
