I'm guessing the KZ will mate to a stock 5-speed. And probably an auto, but the shift points would need to be adjusted for the lower powerband.

There is a company in Oregon that specializes in diesel swaps for Toyotas. If you YouTube diesel 4runner you should find them. It's about 15000$ but that's cheaper than a brand new vehicle. I believe Toyota will redesign the 4runner again and bring a diesel over in the next 5 years.

I fell in love with the diesel hilux in iraq, and I will eventually do the swap with my 4 runner. Hmmm, only 271 miles from me too. How big of a job is it to make the conversion? I may be able to talk the wife into it!

I found the 1KZ a bit sluggish. I'd rather have a 1KD-FTV if I have to swap a 5VZ out. I'm pretty sure that they put the 1KD into later (00-02) 3rd gen Surfs as well. Could be wrong though.

I like diesels as much as the next guy, and would probably buy a Toyota diesel if they sold them in the US. But that engine is not worth the price, unless theres an ounce of gold hidden in it somewhere. The 5vz-fe is very reliable, and makes more tq and significantly more hp. If gas mileage is what someone wants, then why not spend that money on a 5th or 6th gen honda civic and get like 37 mpgs average, AND still have a 4runner that makes more power than it would with the little diesel. Anyways, just my line of thinking. Still, I would love to have a Toyota diesel

The extra MPG's might be beneficial to those who do overland type stuff where there may not be gas stations for a while since the 3rd Gen only has an 18.5 gallon tank(keep in mind that the cost to swap a diesel is not going to save you any money to begin with). For everything else, I would keep the 5VZ. Much nicer to drive IMO. Install a supercharger and it's a blast at the stoplights as well as better for towing. Part availability for a diesel swap is another issue too. Black smoke is a redneck thing.

I love the intercooled 1KZ-TE in my Hilux Surf. Granted, I've never driven a gas-burner 4Runner.
