Diesel swap ideas for my 3rd gen

I don't have much access to do any sort of fab work and I'm looking at some of the more bolt-in simplistic diesel swaps. I'd like to keep to an automatic as after years driving a Mack I don't have much desire to shift gears all day lol. I'm looking more at the 3.3 or 3.9 Cummins although I know there are a few other options such as the Isuzu, Mercedes, etc. Anyone have any experience with any of these to determine the most reasonable route? I want it to be done right when the time comes and be ready to serve as my daily driver still.

If you want a simple swap and a motor that just works, OM617 all day. What kind of pollution/smog laws do you have? Sometimes it's hard to get a diesel swap past the inspectors, might want to check and see what's allowed in your state and county.

If you want bolt-in simplicity, the Toyota 1KZ-TE is it. I believe it bolts right in, aside from moving the cross member back 5".

We don't got no stinkin' emissions laws/inspection lol

^^^ Seems like a rip-off you could do it for less than 6k. OP are you going to be installing yourself or having someone else do it?

I've read the 4BT is to heavy for the 4runner and nearly to heavy for a land cruiser. Would be a great engine in here though. I'd love a 300hp 4bt with a built nv4500. 3.55's in a 9" with a locker and chromoly shafts and a high pinion dana 60 up front. These things would be unstoppable.

I'll be doing the swap myself. Btw I'm in Caryville just up from Knoxville. Right now it's my only ride besides my wife's yota and I'm looking at it more as a down the road project that I can pick a route and start researching and gathering parts as I progress. I'll have to grab me a little beater taco or older 4Runner to get around in whenever it's time. The 4BT would be my prime choice but as mentioned it is a heavier engine which is why the B3.3 may be an idea? I know Cummins are loud and rattle which is part of why I love one lol. I'm also curious where these other models stand power wise. I tow an 18' center console weekly and the 3.4 does the job although more power would of course be better.

The BEW tdi will easily crank out 425 torque, while weighing half as much as a 4bt. Honestly, if you want diesel, just buy one at an auction in Japan. Mine cost me 690,000 yen, I challenge you to do a complete swap for less.

Added in USD for reference. But I agree with you entirely. There is nothing about a diesel that is cheap.

My budget for the TDI swap was roughly as follows:

  • $1,200 - Donor TDI car
  • $300 - R150 Trans
  • $500 - Custom Driveshafts
  • $750 - Motor Mount Fabrication
  • $400 - Custom Exhaust
  • $1,100 - 17/22 Turbo (NOT REQUIRED)
  • $450 - Custom Tune (NOT REQUIRED)
  • $650 - Larger Injectors (NOT REQUIRED)
  • $400 - New Performance Clutch
  • $500 - Miscellaneous

I did a lot of research for this swap, and I mean A LOT! I really hope someone else decides to actually do it. The TDI's are amazing motors, I'd expect to easily see 28-34 MPG once finished.

Sure there is! The price of diesel fuel currently. Kudos to anyone who actually walks the walk of a swap! It would be an entertaining write up.

I think Absalom is giving us the cost to him of the vehicle not all the other "hidden" costs to get his diesel FJ to his door as well as any other costs to get it to run. Slow boat shipping container from across the sea can't be cheap.

I'm no diesel expert by any means but I wonder how this import will handle the ultra low sulfur that apparently only exists in the US for now.

Was this FOA pricing and specs?

I think someone with the right connections and profession could do it much cheaper.

You're completely right! I didn't mention the additional $2,500 in fees. But still, $8,200 for a sweet JDM HDJ81, not bad :D The Canadians report no issues running ULSD in the 1HDT for the past 10 years, but USA diesel is slightly different, so time will tell!

Forgive me, but unless we're discussing the shock company, I'm not aware of what FOA means? You're right though, much of the fabrication work could be done for free and this would provide cost savings of about $750. The rest are simply products that are bought, at a nearly standard price.
