Diesel swap ideas for my 3rd gen

My budget for the TDI swap was roughly as follows:

 • $1,200 - Donor TDI car
 • $300 - R150 Trans
 • $500 - Custom Driveshafts
 • $750 - Motor Mount Fabrication
 • $400 - Custom Exhaust
 • $1,100 - 17/22 Turbo (NOT REQUIRED)
 • $450 - Custom Tune (NOT REQUIRED)
 • $650 - Larger Injectors (NOT REQUIRED)
 • $400 - New Performance Clutch
 • $500 - Miscellaneous

I did a lot of research for this swap, and I mean A LOT! I really hope someone else decides to actually do it. The TDI's are amazing motors, I'd expect to easily see 28-34 MPG once finished.

That include wiring, ac function, gauges, etc? Or just to swap it in and get it running? That's cheaper than I would have thought.

You'll use the factory vw compressor, good set of gauges are $150 on eBay, wiring is free if you do it, or $700 for custom harness off tdi forum.

absalom,

Do you want to reconsider those MPG figures after the VW news from this morning?

The BEW is pre-dpf. It relies solely on a cat and egr for its nox control. That news only affects the common rail 2.0 tdi

11 million +/- worldwide common rail 2.0 tdi then. Apparently software not mechanical.

"Regulators in the U.S. said Volkswagen cheated on environmental standards by programming engine management software in some diesel cars to turn on emission controls only when being tested. Cars equipped with the device would run up to 40 times more emissions when on the road, the EPA said."

WOW.

Yea, it's a very big deal. However, it doesn't change the fact that VW makes absolutely amazing diesel motors. US passenger car restrictions are suspiciously strict, like proportionately much more strict than their semi truck brethren.

Dang you. I was content with turboing this rig now you've got me contemplating this.
Doing a TDI swap, honestly sounds like less work then turbo'ing on of these trucks. Much of the homework is already done for us by a few guys on the TDI forum, and then you end up with a rig that gets almost double the mileage.

absalom would you be willing to help out with some of the details if someone was serious about doing this? I may do this in the distant future (years) so I'm not really asking for myself, I'm just curious.

P.S. Can anyone tell me how to mention someone as done earlier in this thread? I tried searching for it but couldn't find it, nor could I figure it out! Thanks!

edit: nevermind... I figured it out

My issue with ordering one overseas is it seems like a massive pain to start with and also a parts nightmare for some of this stuff. Part of why I like the domestic option like the cummins is I can drive 30 minutes to get all the parts i desire. I'm going to try to look more at the B3.3. Would there even be any small 3-4cyl Cat options that might could be adapted just to be different and still have parts availability local?

This swap has my interest as well. Is it possible to do this swap with an automatic trans, or do you have to do a 5 speed?

How funny! I just was browsing the site last night and found this thread. Today I bought my first 4Runner ('97), and found a $700 running TDI in town. Unfortunately, I don't have the skills to do the swap (not that I need to anyway, but $700 is CHEAP)
