I've seen a couple vw swaps and a toyota 2l will pretty much bolt in to stock 4cyl trucks. The toyota parts are hard to find and pricey they also have head problems and replacements are very expensive.I was going to do the vw swap but so far I'm pleased with the 22r

Yes,your lucky noth of the border we don't have many around down here.If you find one it's 10 times the price of a gas

I looked for a 2lt last night and found some for 3500 .It would be cool but that's pricey. If Acme made engine mounts and kit like they do for Sami's I bet we would see alot of vw's in 1st gen 4runners.Parts are cheap compared to toyo diesels heads for 300 instead of a 800 if you can find one and then there's probably shipping.

There are heaps for sale up in Canada. The Hilux Surf. But they are RHD. Its still legal, but would just take a bit to get used to.

Lots of importing companies around Vancouver/Van Island. You can get them for $9000-10000 CAD already imported with the mods to make them street legal for Nth America. Since there from Japan they all have only around 100,000-150,000 kms on them.

I was looking into this 12 months ago but it was out of my price range at the time. All Auto's though too, the only Manual I found the guy wanted closer to $14,000 CAD.

They are all with the 3 Litre Turbo Diesel too, 1KZ engine. Doesnt have the head problems the 2.4L TD had.

Would be nice to find one written off (rear ended) from an insurance company and do an engine swap.

The main problem everyone was having with the VW swap was the exhaust from the turbo is right above the starter.I just read that the 2l bell housing place the starter on the left side which would elimenate that problem.I sent a email to acme asking if they would fabb the engine mounts for first gen toyotas.I'll let you know.

I just got an email back from acme.I've always heard they have great customer service and now I have to agree.Anyway he said they were working on the engine mounts to bolt in a VW diesel to a first gen 4runner.The guy who swapped one in was getting over 30mpg with 32's and a small body lift.
