Unless you're going to go in water up to your roof, there's absolutely no need. That's wayyyy overkill. Plus you don't want your diff venting into your cabin. It smells gross, trust me. I did the diff mod today and that fluid is nasty.

I ran it just under my taillight inside the bumper.
 
I did mine today as well and ended up running it up beside the gas cap exactly as in the mod thread. I agree that any higher would be un-necessary and overkill.

If I were to do it again I may run it somewhere else (like in the bumper under the tail light as suggested) ... but part of the reason for doing this was to remind me to check my diff fluid while I saved up the cash to fix it. :police:

I was going to do under my gas cap but the 4th gens are really tight and it would have been almost impossible to feed the hose through
 
If you want to do it right, you will need to run the vent hose to your air cleaner box.

If you run a snorkel, it will stay as dry as the air intake.

Mind you, there are many breathers on the 4runner.

rear axle
E-locker motor
Transfer case
transfer case solenoid
Space between the transfer case and transmission.
transmission
front axle
ADD mechanism
power steering
brake system

So to do it right, they would all need to be plumbed to the air box.
 
Good list, but it's worth noting not every truck has every breather listed and you forgot a few (front diff comes immediately to mind). The primary reason for asking is that I'm not sure how much expansion we're dealing with on these diffs, and while I don't suspect it is much (I've seen a tiny little bellows thing as an alternative to a diff breather, though I've not heard anything positive about it) I doubt it would smell all that great. I don't think shoving the breather through the rubber grommet in the fuel filler is a very elegant solution, and there must be a better solution. Running it up to the intake is obviously ideal (and for the front diff and most of the other breathers listed, it's a snap), but trying to breathe through that long of a straw seems problematic. It might be worth t-ing the rear diff and locker breathers together and connecting the tubing to some larger ID tubing early in the trek up to the intake. Depending on where in the intake the breathers are connected, the airflow might make for a low pressure situation. Probably not a big deal (anymore than the long straw issue), but something to consider when overbuilding all the same.
 
i ran mine by my gas cap but dont really like it there, i think i may just move it right behind the cap and zip tie it off.

I ran mine through the gas cap grommet and did a clean job of cutting the hole and positioning. It looks fine and is not in the way of the cap at all. I like the fact that it makes me think about the condition of my rear axle while filling up.

It's plenty high, easy to route to, and is very close to the axle, keeping the overall tube length shorter than any other option that gets it this high.

Simple and functional = elegance. Whats the concern here?

Sorry, Singtoe. Front Axle didn't register in my mind as front diff for some reason. Rear axle did though...

Curtperry, I don't care for the idea of running something through a rubber grommet like that. It just seems like a recipe for problems as the rubber ages.
 
I ran mine up under the hood, following the metal lines that run up the drivers side. (I didn't like the gas lid location.)

On the drivers side near the brake master cylinder you should find the front diff. breather. I left the breather cap also, it's wire tied to the hose I used so I know where it is if I ever wanted to put it back on.
 
IMO unless you like the look of that vent next to your gas cap, there's no reason to pull it thru the grommet. Just zip tie it to the filler neck and terminate it vertically as high as you can behind the grommet. It won't be any drier or higher than side by side with the gas cap. Also its more effective vertically than laying on its side. Makes for a cleaner install.

I didn't run mine through the filler tube grommet and zip tied it to the filler neck. There is a plastic shield there that'll help keep the dirt/mud from clogging it up.
