Diff upgrade = suspension lift ;p

So in the process of doing my e-locker retro fit..

And the wife said I could go with the OME lift

What I'm trying to figure out is do I need new link bars to keep the axle from moving forward in the rear...and how important is a new panbar too to keep the axle even.

I was looking at the 883 to get my 3" of lift in the front and 890s for the rear.

Also assembled or not? I got a press and pretty mechanically sound just wondering if its worth the 100 they want...any advice is much appreciated. I'll start a build thread as soon as I can get more then a few minutes..hehe

Thanks in advance.

That's my dad in the picture I got him hard at work =D

I dont exactly understand what your asking. You have a 4runner and your just swapping rear ends right? Why would you need new links if you all ready have some? The panhard is really important, but then again why not just re-use the parts you have.

I would recommend the 883's up front. I know some people who have them, But I would also recommend 891's in the back. They are a little taller/stiffer than 890's and are just right IMO.

as far as putting the coils together If you want to do it its not a hard job at all, but having them show up and ready to drop in is also nice

I'm doing my e-locker retro fit and since I have it so torn apart figured I could talk the other half into a suspension upgrade which worked. I guess what I'm asking is do I NEED the links or panhard or will I end up causing more damage cause I avoided upgrading them now? I know you can get a frame lower part for the panhard bar or should I invest in a longer one?

I dont understand where this "upgrading links" is coming from they are all the same for elocked 4runners and non elocked 4runners.

If you bend one offroad, then that is a perfect time to upgrade, But i get the feeling you all are under the impression that a e locker can bend the links...

No I understand how it works...my question is when you raise the truck your angle changes in the rear. It will move your axle forward, but from my understanding of what you guys are saying and my questions is that you do not need to do it, its irrelevant cause no one seems to do it,lol. I've only lifted jeeps and older pickups so leaf springs and coils which I did links for too.

Was just trying to make sure when I lift it that I'm not going sob I needed this or that :)
The sticky post helped a lot just was making sure I got all my t's and I's dotted and crossed :)

Thanks

I get it now. For the 3 in you are lifting it, the stock control arms are fine. Very few people have done extended control arms. A 3 in lift really doesn't move the axle very far. There is even mixed opinion on the panhard, whether you need an adjustable for a 3in lift or not.

Thanks for the reply sorry i was so confusing in my explanation..hard to upload photos etc off my phone and. Properly explain etc it. Cool I look forward to getting it lifted ;)

BTW, I notice on your pic that you havn't done the rear diff breather extension mod. You should do it even if you won't be doing river crossings to prevent corrosion of the breather, and thus pressure buildup that could cause axle seal leaks. It super cheap and easy.

Ohh I get what you mean now. The short arm links setup is hard to change without getting bad geometry. I am one of the few with some custom links. I made them with a heim joint on one end , and you can extend them slightly, but I left them stock length. with only 3" of lift the stock geometry is fine. The gas tank is in the way, or else I would have made a set up similar to rubicon express long arm kit for jeeps.

Ahh cool, I'll look into the breather mod to. Just doing stuff as I have time and resources to do them. I've heard a lot of people do the transmission mod to, just not sure I wanna do that one either supposedly for cooling due to mileage and it doesn't cool as well after time?

I've seen some where they've gotten the SS panhard bar..I may look into that depending on how it rides and alignment after the lift.

You really can't use a longer control arm with the stock mounts. True, the more you lift the rear, the more the axle will swing forward. At 3" it won't look strange. More lift, then you notice it but there isn't much you can do. If you extended the links then when you stuff the wheels the axle will be pushed into the bumper and rear of the wheelwell.

Panhard bar drop needed? For 3" it isn't NEEDED but it will minimize to swimming feeling you would get without a drop. This is caused by an angled arc of the PHB. With the drop the arc is fairly vertical. It's worth doing.

So ordering the lift in a day or two, but was wondering if I could get away with a sp double throw momentary switch versus a on off on toggle. Just doing it the relay method for my locker. Thinking with out holding thr momentary one I will have to use a toggle right?
