Difference between 04 and 05 Exhaust Systems

Hey Team,

As a pre-notice, I did searching (beyond just this site including several other 4R Forums) to see if I could find an answer but to no avail. I figured someone in this community could provide it.

I have an 2004 SE and was looking at getting a new exhaust system (currently focused on TRD or Borla). However, when searching, I've found that a system for the 2004 model is always at least $400 more expensive than one built for '05-'08.

Can anyone shed light on this? Is there a frame difference for '03-'04? I'm failing to understand why an exhaust system built for the 2004 would be twice as expensive as one built for a truck only a year later?

Also, otherwise if it is possible, can an '05-'08 TRD exhaust system (full setup or part number PTR31-89060) fit an '04?

Thanks everyone.

There is no difference. The sole difference between 4R exhausts is V8 vs V6. I believe the pipes on the V6 are longer.

Thanks a ton eskimochaos. That clears up a lot for me.

You got it, there is no structural difference between the models. Only difference is cosmetic differences on the outside.

What type of exhaust are you looking to get?

You must have a V8, eh? The V8s in 03, 04 didn't have VVTI and the exhaust systems are different. VVTI systems have an extra catalytic converter (4 vs 3, I believe) and the pipe routing is different underneath (more exposed). I've even read that the crossmember in front of the transfer case seems to be positioned slightly differently.

I guess the 03, 04 exhausts are more expensive because they are such a small fraction of the total now.

I can confirm the difference in fitment. Got a lightly used URD catback for my 04 v8, only to find out it doesn't fit :(
