Difference between OEM & aftermarket tires?

I just purchased a set of Yokohama Geolandar AT-S P265/65r17's, but, one thing I noticed while researching them, a lot of people really liked them and said they are great in the snow & will probably get about 50k out of them, while there were some others that said they suck in the snow and that they only lasted 25k. But one funny thing I noticed on another forum, someone posted that there is a difference between OEM & aftermarket tires, so that got me thinking, is that true? Even though the tires have the same markings, can there be two variations? One type for the car manufacturer that might be inferior, and another for the masses that might be superior?

I don't think it's a question of one being inferior verses another being superior. The casings are made the same but the OEM version will have less tread depth, to save $$$, so that means a quicker replacement.

In general most OEM tires I have had on my cars are pretty cheap - both cost wise and in quality. Unless you are talking about a performance vehicle like Corvette.

I have not seen or heard of too many OEM tires lasting more than 25,000 to 30,000 miles without serious wear and tear, and a tremendous loss in handling capabilities. Regardless of your driving styles.

Generally I keep OEM tires for no more than a year before replacing them with a quality tire.

This is true. One prime example:

My brother's 2008 Honda Ody comes with Michelin Energy LX4 from factory.

I bought for my Sienna the same tire aftermarket...exact same tire! The treadwear rating printed on the tire was different...the rating was higher on mine (= longer wear).

BTW, where did you read this about the difference between OEM and aftermarket tires??

Also, i don't believe that AT-S was ever a factory tire for any SUV/truck. I have never seen it being offered.

Oh sorry, never meant to imply that the ats's were an oem option, just asking if there is a possibility of a difference between OEM & aftermarket tires, not specifically Geolandars, but:
