Difference in 2010 FJC Bilstein shocks vs. prior years?

Are the 2010 FJC Bilstein shocks any different than the 2009 and prior years Bilsteins? I read that in order for the 2010s to fit on a 4R, they will need cutting, grinding, and require a different spacer. Is this true?

What I read they are the same just the sway bar is a bit different.

I think the trail teams fj are the shocks that need cutting in the rear in order for them to fit though the hole. I'm getting the TRD fj shocks and was told those are bolt on no cutting or anything.

Thanks. I've read in some places that they are bolt on and in others that they require some cutting. Not too sure which to believe.

Does anyone here have 2010 FJC TT shocks on their 4th Gen that can give me a definitive answer?

I'm pretty sure 2010's require some modification, but don't have personal experience. Previous years are a direct swap, no modification required.

These are the shocks I'm getting. The rear shocks of an fj trail team has these black bushings or something on the end that goes to the frame. I couldn't find a good pic of a fj trail teams shocks but I agree the 2010 fj shocks are the ones to avoid. they might work on a 5th gen 4runner but I'm not sure

Thanks for posting that picture up, SkylineGTRacer. I see that the TRD shocks don't have that black bushing on the end of the shock (just like all the other after market shocks), but the older FJ Bilstein shocks have the same black bushing that the 2010 ones have.

That I don't know. There are far more knowledgeable people with the fj suspension then me. I sure they might chime in here.

A bushing is a bushing. The color means nothing. It could be rubber or poly.
Either way it can be pressed out and replaced.

I know this thread is a little old but wondered if anyone had a clear answer. If I put 2010 FJ shocks on my 2004 to get rid of me XREAS would I have to modify my truck? Has anyone swapped 2010 shocks into a 4th gen? BTW I used the search function and this was the closest thread to my question. Thanks for any input...

I have confirmed, the 2010 shocks are different. The springs, however, are a direct swap. X6runner swapped in the 2010 shocks/coils, some work to get them to swap. It's a shame as I've watched a full set of like new 2010 trail team shocks on ebay go for $50 and get no bids. Leftyguns21 swapped on the 2010 coils to the stock shocks.

The issue is only valid if you're using 2010 FJ parts. There's no issues with 07-09 FJ components. BTY, the 2010 front spring is slightly beefier than those of 07-09. I observed by compared them side by side a local dealer.

You can use your OEM mount kit for the front.
Warning: The 2010 front FJC strut's lower joint needs to be modified in order to fit your TR4.
The rear mounting hole (on the chasis) also need to be enlarged to fit the larger bushing washer. It can be done with some power tools.

i purchased trd suspension(bilstien-blue and gray) from a 2010 fj cruiser limited addition. i tried to install the shocks(front) and the mounting bracket on the a-arm is smaller than the shock bushing. in short,,, the shocks need to be modified( remove about 1/8 in from bushing). newer 4runners may have different size mounting bracket
