Differential at 30K ?

I have been looking at the maintenance guide for my '05 -4Runner Sport w/the V8 and 2WD. AT 30,000 miles it sayd Replace limited slip differential oil and then has a footnote attached to it. The footnote says it applies to: Land Cruiser, 4WD Tacoma, and Prerunner and Tundra. It makes no mention of the 4Runner.

Should this be changed at 30,000 miles?

I did -- switched to Mobil 1. The stuff that was in there was stinky and black, so figure it could not hurt.

I change both diffs, tranny, transfer case, and coolant fluids at each 30,000 interval. I have the 2003 so it needs more attention (different fluids than newer ones). I am also a little nuts when it comes to changing fluids.

it's time to do my differential and transfer fluids too in my 2003 4Runner. Does anyone know if toyota Service has a fluid type requirement other than weight, ie. regarding no synthetic or synthetic ok? I want to use a synthetic blend.

Just read my post two above yours -- I switched to Mobil 1. When I got the crush washers, the guy at the dealership said it was a wise choice to use.

thanks for your reply back. I read some were adding additives to mobil I diff fluid ? I plan to use a blend of synthetic / regular diff oil.

The diffs and the transfer case do not hold that much (capacity) so why blend oil types? I would stick with just one type. No additives are needed either.

you have a point. Gear oil does come in a synthetic blend for $ 4 - $ 5 a qt. vs $ 9 - $ 10 a qt for full synthetic. My thinking was the blended form could be a good compromise between cost and benefit. Are most here that use fully synthetic Mobil 1 gear oil still changing it every 30K ?

I've been using Amsoil fluids for about 5 years now with no complaints. They claim a 100,000 mile change interval during normal service and 50,000 under severe conditions; I've been splitting the difference and changing it at 75,000 miles or whenever I think I might have gotten water in the pumpkins & xfer case.
