Differential fluid change

I have used a hand pump (looks like a large metal syringe) but it is not necessary. Gear oil has a tapered (conical section) cap on it. Cut the top of the cap off and slip some Tygon tubing, or any rubber tubing like fuel line over the cap. Squeeze away. I place my gear oil on top of my water heater, the night before. This warms it up a tad and lowers the viscosity. This way it

I have a pump like this for the lower unit on my boat. You don't need the adapter on the end of the hose. It is to fill the lower unit from the drain hole (thick stuff, no air pockets).

Autopart stores may have something similar. Or swing by a boating store and pick one up.


I have not looked at changing my fluids yet, I don't know exactly what will work, and what won't.

That is the one I have and it worked great. IMO you WILL need the pump. It will at least make things alot less messy.

The Amsoil pump is labeled as a marine pump so, as mentioned above, you may be able to find one using that angle.
 
Your right, I needed the pump. I dont think it could of been easier. It took awhile to pump all that fluid, but it was easy.
 
I thought I would post up the part numbers for the crushwashers. I had to go to 3 different dealers to get these damn things. Hopefully this will help someone out in the future!

Front Diff Drain

Hopefully this will save someone the headache it caused me.

Total cost was almost 7 dollars for 2 of each.
 
I just purchased a 2003 V8 4Runner sport 2WD and while reading through the owner's manual it states that the differential requires 80w90 gear oil. I noticed a lot of you are using 75w90, and although there isn't much of a difference, I wanted to find out if there was any particular reason? I don't think the 80 (cold) weight as opposed to 75 will matter for me, since I live in Texas; but just wanted to find out the reason why.

I'm enjoying the heck out of this thing so far. Tons of power, great handling, etc. As long as it stays as reliable as Toyota's reputation has built itself, I will be happy to drive this thing for a long time!

I ordered 3 bottles of the Amsoil 80w90 gear oil and plan to change it every 50-100k miles. Does this sound reasonable? I do drive pretty hard and will do some occasional towing (just pulling my stripped-down race car to local AutoCross events and other 'utility' stuff).
 
I *think* the only reason I used 75/90 was that was all that was available at the time from amsoil, I could be wrong though.

Whatever I ordered 75/90 was what was delivered and I knew it wouldn't make a difference so I used it. Maybe it will help in the winter.

BTW the three "bottles" you ordered, were they more than quarts?
