dimming mirror with compass

We want to add the OEM dimming mirror with compass (don't need map lights) to our 2004 4Runner SE.

I tried partznet and they don't have one listed, but they (Concelli) are local so I'll give them a call.

Different websites have different prices and some say they will fit certain cars/models and others don't specify. Even thought the pictures are the same at all sites, could some be OEM and others an aftermarket brand? Could some mount to the windshield and some to the roof?

Anyone have experience with this? I did a search and found folks buying a dimming mirror, but it didn't have the compass.

Here's my research so far:

This website has it for ~$170, but it says it will only fit SR5 and Limited, which makes no sense unless there is some trim difference in the Sport that I've missed. Of course the website also says the V6 is a 5-speed auto so they might just be wrong about the mirror.

This site has the mirror for ~$190, but it is a LandCruiser item, even though it looks the same (could be representative pic only).

This site has the mirror listed for the 2004 4Runner, regardless of trim level and it's a whopping ~$240!

Thanks to Thai for putting together the thread below; that's where I got all my links for online shopping. :)

I think I'm going to call about the $170 unit and see if it is OEM and if it will fit a 2004 4Runner SE.

Thanks in advance for any help,

OEM manufacturer?

Thanks John! :)

By manufacturer, I assume you mean Mitocorp is the Toyota OEM manufacturer? I can't recall what the display looks like on the Toyo mirror...but I'd love to get the factory mirror.

I did try a search before posting (I'd hate to ask the same question twice if I coudl help it), but my search for "mirror compass" in all forums turned up these message threads:
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/searc...id=28671&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending

Two threads mentioned the mirror in the subject, but one was for mirrors without the compass and the other was for a '01 mirror that didn't reference an OEM-like mirror. If I missed another message thread, let me know and I'll go read that. :)

I believe Mito makes the Gencorp mirrors which are the port install option from Gulf States.

You can actually get mirrors with HomeLink built in, too, if you want to spend the money.

Thanks John, that's what I wanted to know--OEM port part.

Interesting bit of info on the mitocorp website:
http://www.mitocorp.com/nvs_special_brackets.htm

As they say:
THE FOLLOWING VEHICLES COME FROM THE FACTORY WITH THE GM/CHRYSLER MOUNT WHICH THE GENTEX MIRROR ATTACHES TO:
This includes the 2003 4Runner, Highlander, Tundra, RAV4, Camry, and Matrix; so it looks like any mirror that mounts to these year vehicles or uses the GM/Chrysler mount, will install in the Gen4 4Runner. I'll assume the electrical connections would be just like adding any other accessory.

Aww heck, I just looked in a pdf that Woody posted in the following thread: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=715&highlight=compass+mirror

It states that Gentex is the Toyota brand of mirror, so it looks like what mitocorp is selling is definitely an OEM mirror. Anyway, these instructions should make the job much easier. Thanks Woody! :)

Ian did you get the mirror? Connecelli doesn't have it because it is exclusive to Toyota's Southeast distribution.

I got the part number from Woody's post and called toyotaparts4u (in North Carolina) and they have it for $169.96. I'm going to order next week but wanted to know how you made out in your search and if you went with the mitocorp. mirror.

BTW you local to Conshohocken, where you at? :D

I haven't bought one yet, but that's a good price on the dimming mirror that includes the compass. (Part Number: 00016-89931?) I was going to surprise my wife with the mirror, but she *really* wanted a 50lb punching bag (of all things!) for kick boxing workouts so that's what I've been working on recently. I'll probably order the mirror from toyotaparts4u soon (thanks for the heads-up!).

Before you spend $200+ on a mirror, shoot a message to this eBay seller (his name is Bob Prim). I can dig up his e-mail somewhere if you need it.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33699&item=2457112804

This particular auction isn't for what you're looking for, but if you e-mail him he might have what you're looking for and for A LOT less than any retailer. I bought my autodim + compass + Homelink mirror from him for just over $200 and that included $15 to convert the compass display from green to orange to match the instruments in the 4Runner.

My Gentex mirror was probably a pull or overstock from somewhere, but it came in as-new condition, had all of the necessary wiring and instructions, looks exactly like the compass/autodim mirrors that come stock (except for the Homelink buttons at the bottom), and Bob was able to get it to me exactly when he said he would.

Just my $0.02...

As CRMartin9 said: He also has mirrors that aren't listed in his current auctions. He is shipping me one tomorrow that has:
-- auto-dimming
-- compass
-- home link
$195 to my door.

It took about an hour to carefully install it by running a pair of wires (one chassis ground, the other to the fuse box) under the front of the headliner, under the A-pillar trim, and behind the dash facade. Pick a wire that is powered on with the ignition to avoid battery drain--the wires will vary by MY and possibly build date.

It's possible that newer Toyos are hardwired for it, so make sure to pull back the headliner and check before going to further effort.

I just called Mitocorp ( licensed distributor of Gentex ) and they said the mirror with backup lcd/compass will be available at or around SEMA time. That's like almost a year away ! I guess they want to keep folks waiting. The same mirror with homelink will be available a year after that.

I guess I'll go with the homelink mod for now and wait for the mirror.
