Dinghy Towing

Was curious to know if it is possible to dinghy tow a '99 manual transmission. I questioned my local Toyota Sales / Service Dealer and svc. mgr. had to place an inqury with Toyota Svc. USA. He believed since the transfer case could be put into neutral, it would be possible but didn't want to give "unofficial" information.

I'm looking to pull it behind my Class C RV any other advice would also be helpful such as linked braking systems, and vehicle light kits.

I towed a manual tranny 2000 4runner for over 75K miles in 5 years. Never had a problem. However, Toyota officially states that they do not recommend towing a 4runner.

I have a friend who is still towing his 1999 manual 4runner. No problems with his either.

One caution about putting xfer case in neutral - putting it in neutral engages 4wd on front wheels (actuates the ADD). So, you will be spinning more hardware than necessary. Just put tranny in neutral - that's all I ever did.

If want to lessen the amount of hardware you spin even more, install a set of manual hubs. Don't know if it really makes any significant difference.

As a disclaimer - Your experience may differ from mine.
