Disabling lock/ unlock Beeps

I have a 2003 4 Runner and want to disable the annoying beeps that come when you lock/ unlock the 4Runner. The manual says to contact the dealer for info. Does anyone have this info? I'd really like to turn these beeps off.

We had the same feelings about the infuriating loud beeps on our '03. We also wanted to kill the stupid flashing lights. The dealer charged $50 to turn off the flashing lights and decrease the volume of the beeps. They claimed there is absolutely no way you can do it yourself, they had to hook up "the computer' to do this and absolutely HAD to charge me for it. And no, they wouldn't do it as part of the new car delivery configuration, they said I would have had to ask to include the beep adjustment when I bought the car. Of course, when you buy the car you have no idea the elecronic systems on the vehicle are so primitive that you can't configure this yourself. And also, even for $50, the dealer claimed that if they turned off the beep completely, the remote unlock button would no longer unlock the vehicle. So we still have the beeps, although they aren't as bad.

There is probably soem way to do it that is hidden out there, Theres now way that it should cost $50, that probably pure profit for them
 
Actually, it's possible that the computer is needed. If you buy a new key, it requires a special Toyota computer to initialize it for use in teh 2003 4Runners. You can't do it yourself (just read the TSB with the instructions).
 
The best way to get this kinda stuff for free is to play the dealership/customer card. You bring your truck there religiously for service, right? You recommend them to family and friends... and you brag about how well the job is done with a high level of professionalism. "Do you think you could just do this for me and save me some money?"

You might get it for free or at a reduced price but it never, ever hurts to ask. :)
 
Thanks for all of the comments on my original question. My dealer verified that the beeps can only be turned down and not off. Without any groveling, threats, or negotiating on my part, they turned the beeps down as far as they could go for free. I am much happier now . . . a good middle ground. I know the locks are engaged, but my neighbors don't. I was also impressed with my dealer. They then washed my car for free as a part of any service. Smile on my face!
 
I had the same complaint about the beeps on my 2003 4Runner I bought a couple of months ago. I live in a neighborhood of townhouses and think it was pretty rude to my neighbors to wake them up at 5:30 am when I unlock the truck to leave for work. For some reason, Toyota sets the default on their alarms at the maximum volume level.

I took it back to the dealer and insisted that they turn the beeps off for free. Using a handheld computer that connects to a plug under the steering column, the mechanic could access a host of alarm, lock, and window options. He was able to turn the beeps completely off, but this also disables the sound on the car alarm. (Now when the alarm goes off, the lights flash but there is no noise from the car.) The lights still blink when I unlock and lock the door, but this can also be disabled as well if you wish. At the same time, I had them change the configurations so that I only have to press once on my remote to unlock all of the doors (as opposed to twice), and change the doorlocks so that all of the doors unlock when opening the driver's side door.

For the line I quoted -- "unlock and lock" meaning with the key or with the remote?

Hmmm, so when I paid Toyota of Seattle the $50 they insisted I had to pay, they didn't even give me the correct information. Our vehicle doesn't have an alarm, so we could have had the remote locking beeps turned completely off. Another reason I will never do business with them again. (There is a much more service-oriented and competent Toyota dealer in northern Seattle, All Star Toyota.)

By the way, the setting to have all the doors unlock when the driver's door opens is one of the four user-configurable locking functions. See page 17 of the owner's manual.

Sorry about the lack of clarity - to answer your question, I was referring to unlocking and locking the vehicle with the remote.

Thanks. The RS3200 Plus manual says that using the key to lock the vehicle should automatically arm the system, but mine doesn't. When I take it in for the next oil change, I'll ask about it.
 
There is a good thread on yotatech I think.

I pulled the piezio because it was annoying as hell. It takes 30 sec. to pull it out, wrap the end in tape "just in case".

Now all quiet and no other issues. The piezio is in my glove box. I thought if one day in the distant future if I sell the 4R I can pop it back in.

oh, my lights still blink when arming/disarming the alarm-just no beeping now.
 
haha, yeah, i read that thread and pulled mine out in about 30 seconds as well. i didn't tape, but that's a great idea and i'll do that tomorrow.

that chirp was annoying the hell out of me! now i am going to carry the little piezo chirper around and be grateful for its silence. :)

have you had any issues having yours out? after i took mine out and locked the doors again, the horn honked at me ... but it could've been because i left one of the doors open. i dunno.

anyway, so far so good!
 
I hated the beep as well. It can be turned off. Completely off. It does take a minute with the right computer tool, but it is not a big deal, and they certainly should do it with no charge. Come on, you just dropped 30-40 large on a new truck. It's ridiculous, and they would never see me again if they didn't reimburse or offer a couple of free oil changes for first, lying to you, and then making you come back to do what they should have done the first time you asked.
Don't back off. If you take this from them on an early visit, the dealer service guys will know they roped another sucker, and gauge you every chance they get!

Just my opinion, but either way, get the beep shut off. If they have a problem still, have a tech get a hold of Armondo at Alexandria Toyota. (703)684-0700. He took care of it for me.

I went in to have them program the unlock button to unlock all the doors instead of just the driver's door. Pushing the button twice got under my skin, and I wasn't going to have any of that. They did it for free and asked if I wanted anything else done while I was there, it just plugs into the OBD2 port and reflashes part of the ECU Rom. You can't do it, but they should do it for free.

Yeah, the last time I had mine in, I also asked them to change the unlock feature to unlock all doors. So now, when I hit the unlock on the remote once, it unlocks all doors. And when I shut the car off, it unlocks all the doors.

They weren't sure if they could do this, and I got the impression they've never heard of such a thing. But, they did manage to get it done.

What's weird is, looking in my manual afterwards (I had thought I had read where the dealership must do this), one of the features you can do yourself.

I think it was when you shut the car off, you can change it yourself, how it works. Whether it unlocks any doors, all doors, or just the driver's door.

But to change the functions of the keyless remote, they have to do it with their computer.

I have the VAG-Com tool for my VW, and was able to change these features myself. Nice tool to have!
 
The only thing you can change yourself is when the vehicle locks/unlocks the doors. You can set it to lock when you put it in Drive, or when your speed goes over 12mph. You can have it unlock the doors when you put it into park, when you take the key out, or when you open the driver door. Look in your manual and you can customize those.

Sometimes I wish they had a VAG COM system for our trucks, my friend had it on his VW too and it was great.

Oh well I guess...
