disappearing oil....

OK. I'm trying to figure out why my truck loses approximatly 2-2.5 qts of oil (10w40) btwn oil changes (3k miles). There is no visible leakage, some seepage but nothing that worries me. I don't see any smoke in my exhaust. Is this an acceptable thing or is it going to be a real problem? Ive worked on older vws and bmws but my 4-runner is a new project for me and I could use some insight.

While some engines may use up to a qt every 3-4K mi and be considered "normal" usage, Toyota engines aren't among them, and 2-2.5 qts is a lot. If there are no leaks, it's probably being burned at such a low rate it's not real visible in the exhaust.

You didn't state what engine, year, or mileage so that's the best answer I can give.

Oh yea year and model would probably help. It's a 94 sr5 v6 5spd 152k. The engine appears fairly clean from topside and looks typically grungy from below but like I said nothing major visible. The engine is totally stock nothing done to it but a T-belt and h20 pump. thanks

does it look like your coolant & oil r mixing together, it could be the head gaskets

So far there isn't any visible oil in the coolant or viceversa.... how long do the rings last? this is starting to get depressing...

Bob, I am curious if you ended up getting this looked at or what the outcome was of this...? I was having similar oil usuage but no major leaks and the same engine for the most part (94 V6 3.0) including the new timing belt and water pump.

My outcome...to make a long story short was a seized motor a week ago....

So far so good. I've just been checking the oil level once a week and adding oil as needed. I took it to a mechanic and they couldnt find anything visibly wrong w/ the engine.

If you think it might be burning it off, you might want to give This stuff a try before rebuilding etc. The website claimes it works wonders, and I have been using it for about 6 months and have noticed slight power increase (my compresion was low in 2 cylinders). Read the site its pretty interesting how it works.
