Disappointed in the 4runner Rims

After 2 years 82,000 kilometers I am extremely disapointed in teh 4runner rims.

Wife and I clay barred and Waxed the rig last night and we did the wheels too. WOW. The Finish is bubbling and flaking off on parts, especially where previously installed balance weights are put on.

Is this quite normal? I have a 2002 Honda Accord and the wheels still look new.

Were both your 4Runner and Honda driven in winter on salted roads?

Its a known issue with some Toyota/Lexus rims. Talk to your dealer, they might replace them.
 
I'm in a same boat. Is yours 17" diamond cut wheels? They are garbage really

I might think about taking my wheels back to the dealer who sold me the truck, but I think everyone is now dead.:hello:
 
Getting Toyota to warranty something that's cosmetic due to them penny pinching is like pulling teeth.
 
I have those same rims with similar delamination under the wheel weights.

The PO curbed a couple of them up so bad though that I don't really care at this point. ;)
 
Count me in as another "disappointed" owner of these wheels.

My 4Runner is 6 years old with 34K miles. These wheels were used during the winter of 2004-2005. Ever since I have used snow tires mounted on steel wheels every winter since. In my case the peeling/rusting is not near/under the wheel weights but on other areas of the wheels.

If other owners here want even more disappointment crawl under your 4Runners and look around for rust on the frame and suspension. Talk about a bigger disappointment. Funny how my 25 year old VW has little to no rust on it's undercarriage and suspension and my 6 year old 4Runner is such a mess. Seeing as how BOTH vehicles have been exposed to the SAME road chemicals one has to wonder what VW did right and what Toyota did wrong. Hmmmmmm.

My '02 VW is perfect underneath. The 4Runner looks like crap. Perhaps the Tacoma buyback program for owners with frame rust-through was not enough of a lesson to teach them how to properly protect the underside of a vehicle.
 
Me too. My 08 rims, which are 18" btw, are flaking. All round the inside spoke area it's bubbling and flaking off. After 35,000 miles that is crap. It does give me an excuse to buy some nice aftermarket ones.
 
It's not the wheels that are bad. It's the finish. The clear coat is basically a sheet of clear coat that is laid over and melted / baked on the wheel. It's like a plastic when done, so once it cracks it takes the paint with it.

I've spoken to numerous shops that will refinish the wheels completely for $400 a set. They guarantee the finish for the lifetime of the truck (not for curbs or damage).

They take the wheels off. Either remove the rubber or just deflate and break the bead to they can sand and wrap the clear coat all the way around. They hand sand the wheels. Prep and repaint with your choice of color. Use an aviation based clear coat on top.

When you have your tires changed, make sure the shop is using an alloy wheel friendly machine to mount the tires! Not all mounting machines are the same, and some will damage your wheel.

This is all from research, so I'll tell you if my advice is actually good when I get them done.
 
Is that happening around the weights or every where ?

I can't believe car dealers and auto makers and some tire dealers continue to HAMMER weights on clear coated , polished wheels . And adhesive weights have been around for how long now ? Sheesh :nono:

My friend just got new tires on his Taco and same thing , where the old weights were , its all bubbled and corroded .

Toyota's fairly infamous for the poor finish of their alloy wheels. But it's not just Toyota. I'm a recent convert from Jeeps which had similar clear coat issues w/ alloy wheels.
