Disappointing - Local Toyota dealer trying to almost double prices on parts!

Atkinson Toyota in Bryan-College Station, Texas is trying to almost double the prices on OEM Toyota parts. Prices below are compared to Toyota of Dallas. At Toyota of Dallas you can get these prices on their website or in the store, so these aren't just internet prices.

When they gave me the total over the phone I initially thought that they had screwed up the order. Of course I knew that they were gouging me on price when they gave me a $17.72 price for the TRD filter - these are $9.30 everywhere.

Anyway, I had all of my color-coded price research with me and I think that I caught them off guard. I told them that there was no way I was paying almost double for the same exact part. They ended up adjusting the prices to $1 or $2 more than the Toyota of Dallas price. For convenience I was willing to do this and actually I came out ahead when you calculate what shipping would have been from Toyota of Dallas.

This is disappointing because I would like to use my local Toyota dealer when I need them, but now I don't trust them. How many unsuspecting women (sorry, but I think that a woman not familiar with cars is more likely to pay $17.92 for an oil filter than a guy) go to the parts counter and simply pay the price on the invoice?

This isn't right - Toyota USA shouldn't let dealers do this. I'm fortunate that I did my research. Does anyone else have a local dealer trying to do this?

I also bought the OEM Toyota 90915-YZZD3 oil filter for around $4.00 - not sure which one is best at this point.

Those ARE INTERNET PRICES. Some dealers will give internet prices and some wont. My local Toyota dealer has the same over priced pricing like you show. But if I request and submit a part request online they will give me internet pricing, minus shipping, + tax which comes out cheaper.

But again your dealer his showing over MSRP pricing online. This is kind of a normal thing with local dealers.

The Toyota of Dallas prices may be internet prices, but you can also walk into the dealership (without having an order on the internet) and get those same prices.

My local dealership prices are ridiculous as well (above retail). I had a friend that worked for a dealership in another state and told me that my local dealership was on the highest tier for pricing for some reason. One time I complained about them doubling the price on a seal and it being higher then list price elsewhere. They matched the on line price. I don't bother using the local dealership unless it is an emergency.

Dealers are 3rd party and if they want to sell locally online prices they can. In your situation I would just not buy from them. They are allowed to set prices however they want. If its the only dealer around I can see why they mark up.

I bought my Denso oxygen sensors and spark plugs from Rock Auto with the TacomaWorld 5% discount code. I got the NGK spark plug wires at Advance Auto and my Mobil 1 oil at Walmart. I had it all planned out as to where it made the most sense to buy all the parts that I needed for some upcoming maintenance, but the local dealer prices really threw me for a loop. It would be nice to be able to go to the local Toyota dealer for certain service items or OEM parts, but now I am going to avoid them all together. How can you trust a dealer like this?

This Country has a Free Market economy. Retailers can set prices wherever they deem fit. If the prices are set too high, customers will go elsewhere, and the retailer will either be forced to lower their prices to be more competitive, or go out of business.

Do your due diligence, and as always; buyer beware.

Stealerships live in the stone age. It's only a matter of time until they are obsolete. Just look at the business practices of Tesla. The only thing that is keeping them alive are government regulations and soon those will be dissolved and they will have nothing to stand on.

I'm new to the board so I'm not sure how this works but I am a Toyota Dealer in New Mexico. If you get me the parts you need I can get you a price. If you like the price great, if not no harm no foul.

I wish there was a free market economy on automobiles and their supplies. Considering dealers make less on new cars and trucks than they did when our 3rd gens were on the lot, they have to make the fiscal difference up somewhere.

More electronics and parts specific to a specific car maker today equals a higher cost charged to fix them.

$14.69 for a PCV valve? You got off cheap. The list is $10.69 My local dealer wanted $21 and change. I told them they could keep their 100% mark up on parts.

It's called matrix pricing. It's a formula that adds gross profit onto parts prices.

They do this in San Diego. They do it almost everywhere.

I didn't realize it for years until I started buying online.

You can ALWAYS walk into a dealer and ask them for the price of a part and then ask them to sell it to you at MSRP. They will 99.99999% of the time sell it to you at MSRP.

If you buy it at double MSRP you just got F#%#&KED.

Yes. All the dealerships I've worked at over the years do it as well.

It's very disappointing how some of the Toyota dealerships treat customers in general.

One of my local Toyota dealers will not even match OEM Toyota parts purchased from a Toyota dealer online. Even with their good customer discount 10% they are still substantially higher (I've purchased from them as needed for almost 30 years).

There are some Toyota dealers that treat their customers excellent. One that I order parts from is Toyota of Dallas (Parts Department Online). They have treated my family and myself excellent. I cannot say enough good things about them.

Yes in my opinion they do take advantage of women in general in the automotive industry. I have witnessed it first hand with many family members and friends. They have even tried to overcharge when I was present (charging the customer for their own Toyota OEM parts they provided for the repair) seriously.

Some Toyota dealerships and automotive dealerships in general don't seem to understand that if they treated the customers right and honest they could profit greatly.

Educating yourself like you've done is the best way to keep them honest. :reddance:

My dealer has one parts guy that goes back to my first new Toyota, a 1980 Corolla I bought the year the place opened. He gives me 20% off. I tell anybody else, ¨Dan always gives me 20% off¨ and I get it.

Yes, and they'll probably be surprised if you know the term "matrix pricing". I'd even see if they'd sell it at wholesale pricing, you be surprised how much markup is actually in parts.

Like "can you give me matrix pricing?" Or should I just stick to asking for the part at MSRP...

I may have to eat crow about all dealers being scum of the earth with parts pricing.

I went into Fred Anderson Toyota in Charleston SC this morning for some wiper blade refills for my mother's Camry. The parts guy charged me 10% off MSRP since I paid with cash. Not bad at all.
