Disassembling Rear Hatch -> Stuck Rear Window

Howdy again,

The previous owner of my 4Runner backed into a mailbox which dented the rear hatch directly to the right of the exterior wiper arm.

So when you try to lower the rear window, it goes down about 1", then binds on something inside the door; you can physically see the sheetmetal around the dent deforming as the window binds up.

I'm thinking the wiper arm, or other mechanism is getting caught on the window arms, causing the binding.

I've already removed the interior trim panel, but can't see, or even feel that area. Seems like I need to go from the outside, in. How do I take off the exterior trim piece around the license plate?

I have had to do this a few times. To remove the surround for your license plate you have to remove it from the inside. First open your hatch with the window up, pop off the plastic cover, and there will be to your right the ABS equipment. Just unhook that and remove all bolts... I believe 12 in all, they are gold in color. Then remove the metal cover that is protecting the glass and motor. There will be additional gold bolts, 4 I believe, that you will need to remove. Then you will be able to see the back of your license plate and the 4 additional bolts on the inner portion of the back of the license holder. Be very careful to unscrew the screws that hold you key lock that is built into your license plate bracket... they are very weak. Take out the screws, and the 4 bolts and pop it off, remove the license plate lights and your are all done. It is not that hard just be patient. And once again be very careful about the key lock it is very fragile(I found out the hard way)
