Discovered another cool thing about my 2003 T4R

Ok so go ahead and laugh. But has anyone else noticed this? I live and work up in the foothills of CA. I traverse several rather steep hills back and forth in my daily commute. You know how going down a steep hill a car will on it's own pick up speed? Yeah, duh I know. But have any of you discovered that as you start coasting faster down the hill, if you tap your brakes your T4R downshifts on it's own, and thus slowing you down?
Is this one of the big deals about the Torsen Transmission?
Pretty cool I think. I used to tap the shift over into 4th to use that gear to help slow down Ruffian, but I forgot the other night, tapped my brakes and felt the runner downshift on it's own. And yes whatever downshifting Ruffian did on her own, it kept her from running away with me.
Is that a double entendre? 4Runner running away. :lmao:

Many newer cars are doing this now. It's sometimes called 'hill-grade logic' referring to the programming of the transmission.

The Torsen deal applies to the transfer case for the 4wd and not the transmission. Torsen technology does lots of cool stuff for us but this is not one of the features we have because of Torsen.

A 2wd 4Runner will do the same thing and yes, the hill-grade logic is a very neat feature.

Also, if you're traveling down hill and you let up off the gas the trans will not up-shift, if you are in a lower gear. These are great features.

Also it works the other way around as well. When traveling uphill, the 4R will stay in the lower gears at higher RPM's compared to traveling on a leveled surface.

Yes, Ruffian. After the great Throughbred filly, the Queen of the Fillies, Ruffian. Who, had she lived longer, would of been even more so well known. The owner/breeder of Secretariat, Penny Chereny, said she never of would of wanted to see Secretariat and Ruffian race, as she'd fear the outcome. And the defination alone for the word Ruffian fits me. Kinda a tom boy. Hello, female typing on a car fourum!!!
I'm a history and horse nut. And yes, she as most machinery are labeled females. And I bought this runner over buying a horse. I opted for a different kind of horsepower, one that I'd get more use out of. And well, I don't have the property to have a horse at the moment. So I gave her a famous horse name. Bucephalus was a close 2nd, but only if I had bought a black T4R and it would of been male like the horse!!!

BTW, I've got a little over 100 miles on my new True Flow airfilter and I'm already seen positive effects. I would of done more mods today, but I got rained out. I did get some pics though.

Ahh...makes sense now. That's interesting how people have their reasons when naming something. Asides that, it's nice to know that both female and male owners alike share the same enthusiasm for the same vehicle. :bigok:

However, I don't know about the name Bucephalus.
