Ditch the OEM Bridgestone 840 H/T's?

With all the tire discussions, I'm thinking I want to get rid of my OEM Bridgestones for the BFG A/T KO w/the snowflake.

I do 8-10 light/moderate off road trips a year to fish, hunt and kayak. The snow is usually no joke around here, either.

On top of all that, the street performance of the H/T's are less than desirable. And I've already had a significant flat, meaning I should replace the patched spare soon anyway.

So with 2500 miles on these OEMS, is it worth a significant investment to upgrade my rubber now, or wait until I wear these out?

Does it help by adding that the 4Runner will only see about 5K/year. Meaning I'm going to have to live with the 840's for 6+ years.

I'm also thinking that if I do change them out now, the GY Silent Armors may be a better choice for me. On road and wet weather traction seem better over the A/T KO.

An investment of $800 over five years for quality safe tires seems to make sense to me, but maybe the 840's aren't that bad.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I have 4,500 miles on my 4R and the snow is about to fly here in Colorado. Even though it's hard to justify $800+ for new meats on a next to new car, I feel that it might be worth the investment anyway.

I called Discount Tire a few weeks ago and they said they could maybe give me $40 per tire credit if I were to buy new tires so I could possibly save some money. If you have enough tread left on your tires, they might give you a few bucks for them. Worth asking at least.

Just stopped by Direct Tire here locally. I was quoted $1150/5 for the GY SA 265 70 R17 mounted/balanced. The manager usually signs off on the trades and wasn't in today. But they typically give ~$50 each. ($200 off for my 4 is $950)

Tire rack has them for $800/5. I wonder what the dealer charges to mount/balance? Plus shipping...

Shipping is about $15-20 per tire. Decent mounting and balancing is around $30. You can search Tire Rack for installers near your zip code and they will list costs.

Good info, thanks. Still leaves it at close to $930 total vs $950 after trade in. Might as well go with the local shop if I'm going to do it.

Still a lot of cash. Why doesn't Toyota offer a tire option from the dealer? I would have spent $500 more upfront to have better tires from day one.

I found that my tires got me through one winter. When I tried going through the 2nd winter it wasn't so great. So before the 3rd I upgraded to Revo's. I say wear them a bit and go from there. Also depends on how much snow you get. I am in Central NY and its the norm to get 1-2ft overnight at times.

I dont' have a set, but am planning to get one or a set of Firestone Destination MTs.

Main thing most notice is that the KO's will slightly rub when you have the truck's wheel turned hard over or on a really hard camber situation.

You can't find a good 3 ply sidewall tire in the 265 65 R17 tire size of a sport. I wasn't sure what your tire size was, 16" or 17".

I saw a new CRV with the Bridgestone H/T's yesterday. A CRV!

I used the OEM Bridgestones the first winter.
During that winter I realized that the Bridgestones were TOO WIDE and not suited very well for use in snow.
I could not justify ditching new tires that were perfectly good for non-winter use.
Then I decided to purchase a set of steel Tundra wheels (dirt cheap) and mounted a set of Blizzaks on them for winter use.
Have been using the summer and winter tires ever since.

If you haven't seen my tire thread in the warranty section, I've sent a letter to Toyota asking them to replace the Bridgestone 840's with a decent A/T (Silent Armor, BFG KO, Revo).

Toyota HQ called last week and said that they sent an official request to the dealer where I bought my truck to credit me for the 840's. I'm asking for $100 a piece. No call from the dealer yet, but Toyota said that they are supposed to contact me within three days. The Toyota customer rep was very helpful and polite.

I'll be happy if this happens and I will have the Wrangler Silent Armors put on for about $1000. This tire will fit my needs and I would have paid $500 extra at the time of purchase to have them.

We'll see. I'm not counting any chickens...

Thanks for the offer, but I have to stick with 265/70R17 to avoid having to do a lift right now.

How did you like the GY SA's?

They have been great, I'll be getting them in 265/75/16.
